    • An error correcting decoder includes a flag memory (20) which stores a flag indicative of a success of an error correction for a bit. When a column direction error correction is to be performed, if a flag for a bit indicates a success, no error correction is performed for the bit. That is, an output of a majority logic circuit (78) is forcedly made invalid. In performing the column direction error correction, if the number of success packets in a first-time row direction error correction is smaller than a predetermined value and if the number of bits corrected by the column direction error correction becomes equal to or larger than a predetermined number, it is deemed as that the column direction error correction is unsuccessful. In performing a second-time row direction error correction, when a threshold value is equal to or larger than a predetermined value, the majority logic circuit determines with referring to a result of the column direction error correction, but without referring to the result when the threshold value is smaller than the predetermined value.

    • An apparatus for editing color image capable, by having a desired color in an original designated and an editing mode selected, of image editing for an image in the designated color in such an editing mode as trimming, masking, erasing, and conversion to another color. A desired color in an original image is designated by a designated color input portion and thereby designated color data for separated colors are obtained. Thereafter, the original image is scanned and image data for separated colors are obtained. The thus input image data are electrically edited in the selected edit mode based on the designated color data and the edited image data are output to an image forming unit and thereby an edited color image is obtained.

    • A random multi-error correcting code having a maximum length block in a packet, for instance a majority logic decodable (272, 190) shortened difference set cyclic code, is used for error correction in a character code broadcasting system. The error correcting ability of this code is increased. The correction is made by decreasing a threshold value, so that the error correcting ability is improved. A framing timing extraction circuit and a phase lock circuit for the framing timing are eliminated, so that the amount of hardware needed is reduced. Preferably, the error correcting code is superposed on the television signal during the vertical blanking period.
