    • An optical system of a projection display apparatus includes a projection lens assembly having a first lens group having a negative power, a second lens group having a negative power and a third lens group having a positive power, all arranged in this order from a side of a screen. An air space is provided between the first and second lens groups and also between the second and third lens groups. Each air space is longer than the entire length of the second lens group as taken along the optical axis of the assembly. The projection display apparatus has a light source for radiating rays of light including three primary color components, a color separating optical system for separating the radiation into three primary color components, first to third light valves each operable to receive the respective primary color components from the color separating optical system and to form an optical image having an optical characteristic varying as a function of a video signal, a color combining optical system for combining images of light emerging, respectively, from the light valves to provide a composite image. The projection lens assembly receives the image from the combining unit so as to project the optical images, formed on the respective light valves, onto a screen.

    • The present invention provides a small projection type display apparatus capable of suppressing an optical path of incident light and an optical path of output light in a reflection type light valve from being overlapped with each other and obtaining a projected image of high quality; a rear projector and a multi-vision system using the same. The projection type display apparatus is composed of an illumination optical system 2 for collecting light radiated from a light source 1 to form illumination light, a reflection type light valve 6 for reflecting the illumination light to output modulated light forming an optical image, a projection lens system 7 for projecting an optical image formed by the reflection type light valve, and a lens element 5 with a positive power. The lens element 5 is composed of one plano-convex lens, and is placed between the reflection type light valve and the projection lens system with a convex surface directed to the projection lens system, in such a manner that the illumination light passes through the lens element to illuminate the reflection type light valve, and the modulated light output from the reflection type light valve passes through the lens element to be incident upon the projection lens system.

    • A conventional optical illumination device has a problem in which uneven brightness appears in an inclining direction when an illuminated region inclined with respect to an optical axis is illuminated. An optical illumination device is formed by using a front optical illumination system, an eccentric lens, and a relay lens. The front optical illumination system is composed of a lamp, an elliptical-surface mirror, a UV-IR cut filter, a condenser, a first lens, and a second lens. The relay lens conjugates a second light-emitting surface and a third light-emitting surface that are inclined with respect to an optical axis. The eccentric lens is made eccentric with respect to an optical axis, effectively emits light, which is emitted from the second lens, to the relay lens, and inclines the second light-emitting surface in a direction in which brightness gradient appearing on the relay lens is canceled.

    • A light valve apparatus in which a first lens array, a second lens array, and a light valve are arranged sequentially from an incident light side, and a focal length of each of the microlens elements for the first lens array is set shorter than a focal length of each of the microlens elements for the second lens array. The respective microlens elements of the second lens array are adapted to form a real image, corresponding to an imaginary object on a focal point of the respective microlens elements of the first lens array, on corresponding pixels of the light valve. A plurality of very small light source images corresponding to the light source are formed by the first lens array, and light emitted from the plurality of very small light source images are incident upon the respective microlens elements of the second lens array such that the images are projected onto the pixels of the light valve. Therefore, since the light incident upon the openings of the light valve can be increased without thinning an incident side glass substrate of the light valve, the substantial aperture ratio of the light valve apparatus may be improved. When the light valve apparatus of the present invention is used for a projection display system, projected images are significantly brightened, and if the light valve apparatus is utilized in a view-finder system, not only is the brightness of displayed images improved, but it also becomes possible to reduce the power consumption of the system.
