    • An illumination system which realizes a color image without a color wheel and a projector adopting the illumination system. The illumination system comprises at least one light emitting device which emits a light beam having a predetermined wavelength and a holographic optical element which reduces a cross section of the light beam. The projector includes the illumination system, a display device which forms an image by processing light from the illumination system according to an input image signal, and a projection lens which magnifies and projects the image onto a screen. The light emitting device may be constructed in an array form and the arrays may be arranged inline and adjacent to an optical path changer or distributed around an optical path changer at predetermined angles. The arrays and holographic optical elements may be provided in layers in order to reduce a size of the illumination system.

    • A projection type optical display system includes: a light source; a display panel with light-modulating pixel regions; a light control system for splitting the emitted light into light rays falling within multiple wavelength ranges and focusing the rays onto associated pixel regions according to their wavelength ranges; an optical system for forming an image on a projection plane by utilizing the light modulated; a circuit for generating image subframe data from image frame data and getting the image subframes displayed by the panel time-sequentially; and an optical shifter for shifting, on the projection plane, one of the image subframes being displayed by the panel. The optical shifter is optimized to an outgoing light ray of the panel, which falls within a wavelength range with the highest luminosity, so as to shift the ray on the projection plane an integral number of times as long as the pixel pitch of the panel.

    • An aerial projection system and method having a housing for positioning low cost optical elements capable of generating a three dimensional aerial images at video rates without reflected artifacts or visible display of the display screen. A method for generating the display images is based on a set of rules that eliminate boundary transgressions and maximizes the illusion of a three dimensional aerial image. An optional second display is a transparent imaging panel that acts selectively as a light valve, as a display platform for special effects or for providing the appearance of linear motion towards or away from the observer. An optional third display, also a transparent imaging panel, may be used as a background display device for displaying video rate images that are not projected aerial images.

    • An image projector that drops into the accessory slot of a luminaire and projects high quality images printed on plastic slides in full color and photographic detail for extended time periods without heat degradation. The projector comprises a cooling fan, infrared and ultraviolet light filter means, and an inexpensive and removable slide assembly comprising a plastic image slide, a protective film slide and at least one mounting plate. The cooling fan is combined with layered, reflective filters to create a protected environment for the plastic image slide to survive the extreme heat at the gate of today's efficient luminaires. The plastic image slide is created on a plastic sheet using conventional computer printing technologies.

The first image may be produced by a slide whilst the second image is produced by a display receiving and converting electrical image information into the second image. Typically, this is a liquid crystal display (LCD). The apparatus further includes a plurality of filters and other optical components (16, 24, 30, 32) to assist in producing a good quality image as well as protecting the LCD. Instead of a slide, the first image may also be produced by an LCD.
