    • A projector 100 projects an image onto a screen 200 by having light from a light source 111 pass through light valves 108˜110 corresponding to RGB colors and a projection lens 101. A special pattern is displayed on the light valves 108˜110 so that an image of the special pattern is projected onto the screen 200. The projector includes a half mirror 112 that directs light, which has been reflected back off this image on the screen 200 and back through the light valves 108˜110, toward the collective lens 113, and a light detecting element 114 for detecting the intensity of the light collected by the collective lens 113. Based on the detected intensity, the microcomputer 116 automatically adjusts the projection parameters of the projector 100.

    • An image display apparatus which represents a grayscale by pulse-width modulation driving of a display element includes: a light source which illuminates the display element; a light source driving part which drives the light source; a photodetector which detects the emission intensity of light emitted from the light source; a sample-and-holder which obtains the emission intensity of the light source by the photodetector at a predetermined timing in a light emission period of the light source; and a compensation current generating part which (i) obtains the manner in which the emission intensity of the light source changes on the basis of a first sample value obtained at a first timing by the sample-and-holder and of a second sample value obtained at a second timing by the sample-and-holder or a predetermined target value of the emission intensity; and (ii) controls the light source driving part for compensating the emission intensity of the light source on the basis of the obtained manner in which the emission intensity changes.

    • A video projecting system includes two video projectors. Each video projector has a scaling processing circuit that generates a scaled video signal from an incoming video signal, the scaled video signal representing a partial image of a predetermined size, a luminance adjustment circuit that generates from the scaled video signal from the scaling processing circuit an adjusted video signal representing the partial image having a reduced luminance in a predetermined region of the partial image, and a display device that generates a partial image based on the adjusted video signal which is outputted from the luminance adjustment circuit. The partial image generated by the display device is projected via an optical system onto a screen, so that respective partial images partially overlap each other, thereby creating one stitched image. Thus, a compact and inexpensive video projecting system which can eliminate the need of manual readjustment of a plurality of video projectors is provided.

    • A projection image display device has a plurality of light sources, a phosphor layer that emits light through excitation by at least any one of the light sources, an optical section, a temperature detector, a light-source intensity controller, an amplitude controller, a luminance controller. The optical section determines an optical path of light emitted from the light sources and the phosphor layer. The temperature detector directly or indirectly detects temperature of the phosphor layer or of the periphery of the phosphor layer. The light-source intensity controller controls intensity of an excitation light source that excites the phosphor layer. The amplitude controller controls the amplitude of a projection image signal. The luminance controller controls luminance of projection images by switching the light-source intensity controller and the amplitude controller according to a detected temperature.

    • A light modulation apparatus using a light source and a device for ON/OFF control an output light of the light source is provided. The apparatus is capable of increasing the number of gradations of light outputted from the device without increasing the frequency of a clock signal that serves as a unit for ON/OFF controlling the output light from the light source. A light intensity modulation circuit generates, based on a luminance signal YS and a synchronizing signal, an intensity modulating signal for output to a power supply, thereby causing a light source to output light intensity-modulated according to the luminance signal.
