    • Prefoamed expandable synthetic thermoplastic resins particles (26) such as lightly cross-linked foamed thermoplastic resin particles (26) are exposed to a gaseous expanding agent such as air or dichlorodifluoromethane which is a nonsolvent for the resin to cause expanding agent to diffuse into the particles and enable them to be further expandable upon heating. The particles (26) with the added expanding agent are then introduced into a heatable mold cavity (23) to loosely fill the mold cavity (23) and a heated gas such as heated air is injected generally into the central portion of the mold cavity (23) by means of a retractable probe (42) to further foam the particles and coalesce them into a unitary product. Upon withdrawal of the probe (42) at least a major portion of the mold cavity surfaces (25) are heated to produce a low density product having a smooth surface. Rapid cycle times are achieved with the process.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain the titled foam having high electrical conductivity and uniform, fine cells, by expanding an expandable polyolefin compsn, by heating it under atmospheric pressure while avoiding rapid expansion, and blending a specified amount of carbon particles.
      CONSTITUTION: 10W30pts.wt. carbon particles and appropriate amounts of a blowing agent and a crosslinking agent are kneaded with 100pts.wt. polyolefin. The resultant crosslinkable, expandable compsn. is heated in a mold under pressure at a temp. at which the blowing agent is not substantially decomposed, to crosslink the compsn. The resultant crosslinked compsn. is expanded by heating it under atmospheric pressure while avoiding rapid expansion, to obtain the titled form. Pref. the heating is carried out in two stages wherein 15W85% of the blowing agent is decomposed in the first heating stage and the temp. is raised in the second heating stage. The crosslinking may be carried out not by heating, but by irradiation with electron beam.
