    • PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrophilic foam persistently endowed with excellent hydrophilicity, water absorptivity and water retentivity, by heating and expanding an expandable crosslinking resin composition containing a PVA polymer.
      CONSTITUTION: A polyvinyl alcohol polymer-containing expandable crosslinking kneaded resin composition is heated and expanded. The obtained foam is acetalized to obtain the purpose hydrophilic foam. Although this foam may be used as a product after it is washed merely with water, it can be improved markedly in water return, water absorptivity, etc., when the foam after washing with water is further treated by contact with an aqueous alkali solution. Examples of the PVA polymers used include PVA having a degree of polymerization of about 500W2,000 and a degree of saponification ≥90mol% and a saponificate of a copolymer of vinyl acetate with an unsaturated carboxylic acid or its derivative.

    • PURPOSE: To obtain a foamed material having excellent hydrophilic property, water retainability and weather resistance, and the feeling of the human skin, by kneading a polyolefin with a foaming agent and a crosslinking agent, heating the kneaded product under normal pressure to obtain a foamed material, interconnecting the cells of the material by mechanical deformation, and impregnating a water-insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol to the foam.
      CONSTITUTION: A foamable and crosslinkable kneaded composition composed of a polyolefin, a foaming agent and a crosslinking agent and free of gel fraction, is heated under normal pressure to effect the simultaneous decomposition of the foaming agent and the crosslinking agent to obtain a foamed material, which is subjected to the mechanical deformation to interconnect the cells with each other. An open-cell foamed material having uniform and fine cell structure and elasticity, an expansion ratio of 15W70 and an open-cell ratio of ≥80% can be manufactured by this process. A water-insolubilized polyvinyl alcohol is impregnated in the pore. The polyvinyl alcohol has a polymerization degree of about 500W2,000, and the amount is 0.001W0.02g per 1cm
      3 of the foamed material.

    • PURPOSE:To simply and effectively manufacture spherical or spheroidal sponge balls by a method wherein sponge materials are charged in a tubular drum, onto the inner surface of the peripheral wall of which a cutting means is provided and yet which is rotated about the center axis of the tube of the drum arranged horizontally. CONSTITUTION:The sponge materials to be cut are charged in a ball mill shell (in which no ball for ball milling are put), onto the inner peripheral wall of which sandcloth is pasted with bonding. The charged sponge materials are cut into spherical form, when the form of said charged sponge material is a cube, or into spheroidal form, when said form is a right square prism, with excellent geometrical and dimensional accuracies, resulting in obtaining sponge balls simply and easily. Because the ball is manufactured at low cost and with high yield, industrial advantage is obtained.

A second method consists of two stages wherein the compsn. is heated in the first stage under pressure for a given period of time whereby 15W85% of the blowing agent is decomposed to form an intermediate primary foam and the primary foam is heated in the second stage under atmospheric pressure to decompose the residual undercomposed blowing agent.

    • PURPOSE: The titled foam which can be used as a water-absorbing material, water-retaining material, or the like and has a good touch to the skin when wet, prepared by coating an open-cellular foam with a porous product of an acetalized polyvinyl polymer.
      CONSTITUTION: An acetalizing solution is prepared by mixing (a) an aqueous solution of a polyvinyl alcohol polymer (degree of polymerization of about 500W 2,000 and degree of saponification ≥ about 90mol%) is mixed with (b) a paste- like aqueous solution of starch or the like, (c) an acid (e.g., hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, or an organic sulfonic acid), and (d) an aldehyde (e.g., formaldehyde). An open-cellular foam (e.g., an ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer having an expansion ratio of about 5W70 and an open-cell content ≥ about 70%) is impregnated with the above acetalizing solution. The impregnated foam is kept at about 50°C for about 15hr to obtain a hydrophilic open-cellular foam comprising the foam having the surface (including those within the open cells) coated with the porous product formed by the acetalization.

      CONSTITUTION: An unsaturated carboxylic acid such as maleic acid or its derivative and vinyl acetate are copolymerized, and the resulting copolymer is saponified to obtain a modified PVA having a degree of saponification of 50mol% or above. An acid such as sulfuric acid and an aldehyde such as formaldehyde are added to an aq. soln. of said modified PVA. An open-cell foam (e.g. polyurethane) having an expansion ratio of 5W70 and an open cell rate of 70% or below is immersed in said aq. soln. and a pressing-relaxing operation is repeated to impregnate the foam with said aq. soln. An acetalization reaction is then carried out at 30W80°C for several hr to several tens of hr to form an acetalized modified PVA on the surface of the foam and within the voids thereof. The resulting foam is brought into contact with an aq. alkaline soln. having a pH of 9 or above.
