    • This invention relates to lacquer binders which can be diluted with water, consisting of a mixture of:A. 50-94% by weight, preferably 55-80% by weight of a copolymer consisting of copolymerized units ofa. 30-65% by weight of an aromatic vinyl or isopropenyl compound having 8-14 C-atoms or of a methacrylic acid alkyl ester having 1-4 C-atoms in the alcohol component or mixtures thereof,b. 10-30% by weight of at least one acrylic acid alkyl ester having 1-8 C-atoms in the alcohol component,c. 1-20% by weight of maleic acid, fumaric acid, itaconic acid or semiesters thereof having 1-8 C-atoms in the alcohol component, or (meth)acrylic acid or mixtures of the aforesaid monomers,d. 0-20% by weight of at least one hydroxyalkyl ester of (meth)acrylic acid having 2-4 C-atoms in the alkyl group or glycidyl (meth)acrylate or mixtures of the aforesaid monomers,e. 10-30% by weight of N-methylol(meth)acrylic acid amide or N-methoxymethyl (meth)acrylic acid amide, preferably N-methoxymethyl(meth)acrylic acid amide, andf. 2-40% by weight of a reaction product of an allyl glycidyl ether and aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic monocarboxylic acid having 2-30 C-atoms or mixtures thereof, preferably saturated aliphatic branched chain monocarboxylic acids having 5-20 C-atoms, in particular .alpha.-ethyl-hexanoic acid isononanoic acid; andB. 6-50% by weight, preferably 20 to 55% by weight of an aminoplast resin; andC. 0-30% by weight, based on the copolymer, of a lactam, 30-100% of the number of carboxyl groups of component A.c. incorporated in the copolymer being neutralised by ammonia or mono- or polyamines.

    • This invention relates to an aqueous binder composition containingA) an aqueous solution or dispersion of an organic polyol component which can be diluted with water and contains at least one polyester resin containing urethane, carboxylate and hydroxyl groups andB) a polyisocyanate component which has a viscosity of 50 to 10,000 mPa.s at 23.degree. C. and contains at least one organic polyisocyanate which is present as an emulsion in component A),wherein the NCO/OH equivalent ratio, based on the isocyanate groups of component B) and the hydroxyl groups of the polyol component present in A), is 0.5:1 to 5:1.The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of these coating compositions by emulsifying a polyisocyanate component having a viscosity of 50 to 10,000 mPa.s at 23.degree. C. and containing at least one organic polyisocyanate in an aqueous solution or dispersion of a polyester resin containing urethane, carboxylate and hydroxyl groups in an sufficient to provide an an NCO/OH equivalent ratio, based on the isocyanate groups of the polyisocyanate component and the hydroxyl groups of the polyester resin, of 0.5:1 to 5:1.

    • Oxidatively cross-linkable, water dilutable binders suitable for lacquers, coating compositions and sealing compounds are modified co-polymers of olefinically unsaturated compounds, having a molecular weight of 6000 to 160,000 and having for each 100 grams of solids content, a total of from60 to 250 milliequivalents of chemically incorporated carboxyl groups, of which from 10 to 100% are neutralized thereby rendering the product dilutable in water andfrom 15 to 50% by weight of chemically incorporated moieties corresponding to the formula--O--RwhereinR represents an olefinically monounsaturated or polyunsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon having a molecular weight above 166 and containing from 12 to 22 carbon atoms, are prepared by:(a) preparing a co-polymer having a molecular weight from 5000 to 80,000, determined by gel permeation chromatography, and having intramolecular carboxylic acid anhydride units corresponding to the formula ##STR1## and an anhydride equivalent weight of from 240 to 1960 by a radically initiated co-polymerization of olefinically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid anhydrides with other olefinically unsaturated monomers,(b) reacting at least 50% of the acid anhydride units present in the co-polymer from (a) with an unsaturated monohydric alcohol corresponding to the formulaR--OH with anhydride ring opening ester formation, and(c) converting the free carboxyl groups in the reaction product of (b) to an extent of 10 to 100% into carboxylate groups by neutralization of the carboxys with a base.
