    • An oil well completion tool having a tubular assembly defining an elongated main passage is adapted to be connected to a multiple-section tubing string within an oil well casing. A severable plug is mounted in the tubular assembly in normal blocking relationship to the passage. A movable shear cylinder unit has a plug-severing edge operable to sever an entire central segment of the plug from a remaining peripheral portion thereof. Separate hinge structure has an elongated U-shaped leg portion connected to the central segment of the plug. The leg portion of the hinge structure, which undergoes elongation, is operable to retain the severed central segment of the plug in the main passage while allowing the central segment of the plug to bodily shift independent of and in a direction away from the peripheral portion of the plug. The severed central segment is received in a recess therefor in the tubular assembly wall structure in order to prevent interference of the severed central plug segment with the main passage.

    • An apparatus for controlling a wellbore energy train may include a firing head, a detonator cord associated with the firing head, and a plurality of serially aligned modules. Each module may include an enclosure, a first portion of a high order detonation material positioned at one end of the enclosure, a second portion of the high order detonation material positioned at the other end of the enclosure, and a low order detonation material interposed between the first portion and the second portion. A method for controlling an energy train generated in a wellbore may include serially aligning a plurality of the modules along the path of the energy train, and detonating at least one of the plurality of modules by detonating a detonator cord.

    • A process and apparatus for manufacturing multiple conductor cable having improved transmission parameters. The apparatus includes a rotatable alignment die having a plurality of apertures. At least one strand of the multiple conductor cable is caused to traverse an aperture of the rotatable alignment die. A rotation motor causes the strand to rotate about its elongate axis, and a translation motor causes the strand, or the cable, to traverse along its elongate axis. The multiple conductors are brought into a predetermined mutual mechanical alignment that is calculated to produce a cable having at least one improved transmission parameter. The cable can additionally include a support member adapted to maintain the conductors in the mutual mechanical alignment. A binder is applied to the cable to maintain the conductors in the predetermined mutual alignment. Tests performed on cable manufactured using the principles of the invention demonstrate improved transmission characteristics as compared to cable made without using the principles of the invention.

    • A downhole pressure attenuation apparatus is provided by which the explosive and hydraulic peak pressure and quasi-static pressure pulses generated by perforating gun detonation are attenuated by one or more fluid-free chambers having initially closed vent ports which are opened substantially contemporaneous with gun detonation so as to provide one or more free volume, pressure absorbing cavities. The pressure attenuation apparatus is made up of at least one fluid-free chamber and one or more pressure relief vents. Each pressure relief vent includes at least one charge port assembly having a prestressed port and an explosive filled shaped charge. The number of charge port assemblies used in each vent is determined by the surface area to be opened and the size of the vent chamber. Each of the charge port assemblies of the relief vent is operatively connected to a common explosive filled, detonating cord which forms part of the perforating gun detonating cord, or an extension thereof depending on the location of the pressure attenuating apparatus with respect to the perforating gun or guns. As the detonating cord fires, it causes each of the charge ports to sequentially fire and blow out the prestressed area of each port so as to open one or more vent holes leading to the vent chamber. The amount of explosive in each of the shaped charges of the charge ports is limited so that the detonation of the charge ports in the relief vent does not damage surrounding tubular bodies in the well.

One or more explosive devices are positioned in a tubing assembly having opposed ends and a thick wall of relatively low-density fibrous material, e.g. rolled paper tube. An impact absorbing element is positioned at each end of the tube. The impact absorbing element may include an end cap positioned within each end of the tube, and a cushion formed of partial tubes and an end cap. The complete assembly is sized to fit and be held in position by a standard shipping container. Multiple perforating charges in a tubing assembly may face opposite sides of a charge divider. Shaped charges may have their concave openings filled with a jet interrupter, e.g. sand. Circular charges may include heat releasable fasteners, e.g. nylon screws, which allow the charges to separate in case of fire.

    • Disclosed are method and apparatus for cutting tubular members from the inside by use of an explosive-induced shock wave. In a particular disclosed embodiment, an electric detonator is used to initiate two equal lengths of linear explosives, each of which initiates a non-electric detonator, to provide dual simultaneous detonation of both ends of an elongate high explosive charge distribution. The resulting collision of detonation shock fronts at or near the center of the explosive charge diverts the shock energy 90.degree. into a 360.degree. distribution about the axis of the charge distribution in a plane perpendicular to that axis to provide the energy to cut a tubular member circumscribing the explosive charge.
