    • An apparatus is provided comprising a first twisting device that dispenses a first wire and imparts a twist to the same, a second twisting device that receives the twisted first wire and twists the same about a second wire, and a metering device or capstan positioned on the outside of the second twisting device that controls the input velocity of the first and second wires. The apparatus can further include a third twisting device that dispenses a second wire and imparts a twist to the same. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the first and second wires are back-twisted and the second twisting device receives the first and second back-twisted wires and twins or pairs the same. A tension transducer is also provided which measures the tension of the wires before they enter the second twisting device. That measurement is forwarded to a controller which issues an inverse control signal to a take-up motor of the second twisting device to minimize tension oscillations on the wires within the twinning device.

    • An apparatus is disclosed for manufacturing communication cables with improved, more uniform impedance characteristics at signal frequencies up to and above 600 MHz. The apparatus includes an “inside-out” rigid twisting machine and at least two bobbins supported within each such machine. Each rigid twisting machine includes a drive for spinning each of the bobbins about their respective axes, and fly-off arrangement is provided for flying off an insulated conductor wire wound on each of the bobbins with substantially no tension in the wire when the bobbin attains a first rotational speed. Guides are provided for guiding the wires from each of the bobbins to a closing point where the wires are closed. A double twist bow arrangement is provided which includes second drive for twisting the closed wires at a second rotational speed to form a twinned cable. Controls are provided for adjusting the first and second rotational speeds to apply a pre-twist to each of the wires about their individual neutral axes prior to twinning, after which a take-up is provided for taking up the twin cable. A bank or line of rigid twisting machines are preferably used to produce two or more twinned cables, which all can then be twinned or twisted about each other to form a multi-cable assembly. An alternate embodiment uses a single bobbin wound with a pair of conductor wires that are flown off together and twisted about each other, resulting in a machine with a smaller footprint and bow and higher speeds of operation.

    • A process and apparatus for manufacturing multiple conductor cable having improved transmission parameters. The apparatus includes a rotatable alignment die having a plurality of apertures. At least one strand of the multiple conductor cable is caused to traverse an aperture of the rotatable alignment die. A rotation motor causes the strand to rotate about its elongate axis, and a translation motor causes the strand, or the cable, to traverse along its elongate axis. The multiple conductors are brought into a predetermined mutual mechanical alignment that is calculated to produce a cable having at least one improved transmission parameter. The cable can additionally include a support member adapted to maintain the conductors in the mutual mechanical alignment. A binder is applied to the cable to maintain the conductors in the predetermined mutual alignment. Tests performed on cable manufactured using the principles of the invention demonstrate improved transmission characteristics as compared to cable made without using the principles of the invention.

    • The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for manufacturing a steel cord. A method according to the present invention comprises the steps of: combining a plurality of the steel filaments supplied from the bobbin by means of the guide rollers; applying a twist pattern to the combined filaments by rotating a pair of flyers arranged between a pair of turn rollers in the counterclockwise direction, and advancing them; applying a further twist pattern to the advanced cord by rotating another pair of flyers arranged between another pair of turn rollers in the reverse direction; stabilizing the cord by means of the overtwist; and winding the resulted cord. The method and apparatus for manufacturing the steel cord have effects that productivity can be improved up to two times or six times even with the same revolution, as compared with the manufacturing apparatus of the prior art.
