    • The vertical chamber of the open throat, vertical chamber baler has its bottom inlet open devoid of a starter roll. A resilient rotary rake tine assembly (78) positioned below and ahead of the inlet opening (58) picks up crop material from the ground and delivers it to a rigid tooth feeder (84) spaced below the inlet opening in vertical alignment therewith. At the beginning of each bale forming cycle when the chamber is small and empty, the rigid tooth feeder (84) propels the crop material into the chamber and against the upwardly moving rear belt stretch (62) which encourages the material to tumble forwardly against the downwardly moving front belt stretch (60). The oppositely moving surfaces presented by the front and rear belt stretches (60, 62) encourages the tumbling material to coil into a bale core (144), which ultimately forms a larger bale. In the event loose material drops through the bottom inlet opening during core starting, such material is immediately returned to the chamber by the rigid tooth feeder (84) along with the other material delivered to the rigid tooth feeder (84) in the meantime.

The size of the bale (17) is sensed as it is being formed and the knives (20) are moved to the non-cutting position as the bale (17) is being started in the bale-forming chamber. After the bale (17) has been started, the knives (20) are moved to the cutting position and these knives (20) remain in the cutting position unless the shape of the bale becomes irregular. When the bale (17) is nearly to its completed desired final size, the knives (20) are moved to the non-cutting position until the bale (17) is completed so that the outside of the bale (17) will hold together better than if such outside portion is cut as the windrow (19) is added to the bale (17).

    • The apparatus of this invention forms and binds fibrous bulk material into bales and comprises bale forming means (12) for forming the material into an elongated continuous mass. The bale forming means (12) has a bale-forming compartment (50) and material flow restricting means (54) for restricting the movement of the material. Auger feeding means (10) for conveying the material into the bale-forming compartment (50), and bale binding means (14) for receiving the mass of material from the bale-forming compartment (50) and binding the mass into discrete bales, are provided. The improvement of this invention comprises the provision of compacting rollers (40, 41) whereby material is conveyed through the compacting rollers (40, 41) into the bale-forming compartment (50) and compacted against the mass of material. The compacting rollers (40, 41) and the material flow restricting means (54) cooperatively function to create the mass of material in a compacted condition with the material being added to the mass of material and compressed thereinto by the compacting rollers (40, 41).
