    • An induction-hardening machine (20) for the contour hardening of hypoid gears (27) includes a programmable logic control unit (21), a source of quench liquid (40) and a high-frequency induction generator (22) which are operably connected to a high-frequency induction coil (70), which has a generally conical lower face (71) and is positioned over and concentric with the hypoid gear (27). The final heating step is a high energy pulse followed immediately by the quenching step.     • For economy of operation, as much as possible of the total length of a steel strip being rolled by a Steckel mill (11) should be maintained at an acceptable high temperature. The strip may be left idle within the coiler furnace (21 or 23) for as long a time as is required to bring the temperature of the wound strip up to a target operating temperature. Then the same pair of pinch rolls in (41 or 43) or near (31 or 33) the entrance/exit port (35) of the coiler furnace (21 or 23) drives the strip out of the coiler furnace (21 or 23) toward the Steckel mill (11).

    • A self-regulating heater is provided by placing a ferrite-type body member (16), which is highly lossy when exposed to a high frequency alternating magnetic field and has a predetermined Curie temperature, on or around a central conductor (14) which is connected or is adapted to be connected to a power source (17) which provides high frequency alternating current to the conductor.
