    • Television receiver with a receiving section, a circuit for processing a received television signal which preferably contains digital data, whereby the circuit has a selection stage (4, 5), and a measuring circuit (9), which has an output (8), for measuring the signal quality or a measured variable representative for that (quality) like, e.g., signal-to-noise ratio, field intensity, bit error rate, etc, of the received television signal. The selection stage (4, 5) possesses a controllable transmission band (range) and has a control input (6, 7). The control input of the selection stage is connected with the output (8) of the measuring circuit (9). The measuring circuit controls the transmission band of the selection stage depending on the measured signal quality in such a way that upon worsening/improving of the signal quality of the received television signal, transmission band of the selection stage is reduced/increased.

    • A method and apparatus for reformatting MAC color television signal to reduce bandwidth. Chrominance and luminance components are serially arranged on a line by line basis with the luminance component not compressed or minimally compressed. The aspect ratio is reduced from the standard aspect ratio by a gate (5) which truncates the edges and feeds the MAC signals into memories (10, 11) for subsequent time expansion. Since a normal television picture tube overscans, the edges of the picture are never displayed and need not be transmitted or recorded. The reformatted signal can be made compatible with a standard composite signal by merely expanding (22) and modulating the chrominance and adding to the luminance (25). The compatible signal has a shorter active video time and a smaller aspect ratio.

    • Chrominance component signals of two different types are produced such that the chrominance signals alternate within a field and between adjacent fields in order to provide an improved amount of information from which to enhance the vertical chrominance resolution of a television receiver. The appropriate chrominance structure is either provided by a special source or else a conventional source is filtered in order to produce the appropriate structure. The filter comprises two portions, one for filtering chrominance signals of a first type from a first field and one for filtering chrominance signals of a second type from the first field in order to provide interpolated signals. A specific filter structure is disclosed which may be used for either pre- or post-filtering.
