    • A method of in-band on-channel (IBOC) digital audio broadcasting (DAB) comprises the steps of providing an analog modulated carrier signal in a central frequency band of an AM radio channel, providing a first plurality of subcarriers in an upper sideband of the AM radio channel, providing a second plurality of subcarriers in a lower sideband of the AM radio channel, providing a third plurality of subcarriers in the central frequency band of the AM radio channel, modulating the first, second and third plurality of subcarriers with one or more digitally encoded signals, and transmitting the analog modulated signal and the first, second and third plurality of subcarriers, wherein the subcarriers in the third plurality of subcarriers that are positioned closest to the center of the channel are transmitted at higher power spectral densities than the subcarriers in the third plurality of subcarriers that are positioned farther from the center of the channel. The power spectral densities of a first group of the subcarriers in the third plurality of subcarriers can decrease linearly with frequency separation from the center of the channel. Transmitters and receivers that utilize the composite IBOC DAB signal are also included.

    • A system and method for transmitting digital information concurrent with a co-existing monophonic amplitude modulated (AM) signal are disclosed. The system allows any AM transmission, in particular commercial AM Radio Broadcasts, to incorporate an orthogonally modulated data signal without significant interference to the on-going AM Broadcast. This data is then demodulated at the system's receiver (700). The system's receiver (700) permits user options as to delaying output of the data and choice of audio (630) or visual (624) outputs. The system also allows encryption of the data prior to transmission to thereby permit only authorized users to access it at the receiver end.

    • A system and method for transmitting digital information concurrent with a co-existing monophonic amplitude modulated (AM) signal are disclosed. The system allows any AM transmission, in particular commercial AM Radio Broadcasts, to incorporate an orthogonally modulated data signal without significant interference to the ongoing AM broadcast. A high bandwith efficiency modulated data signal is subcarrier modulated (14) onto one or more subcarrier signals. The composite data carrier (22) is then quadrature phase modulated (32, 36) onto the broadcast carrier signal (42, 44, 46) before amplitude modulation. The rate of data transmission, measured in bits-per-second, can be matched to the intended transmission channel (16) and AM modulation characteristics in order to optimize delivery performance and quality of service. In the preferred embodiment, data is phase modulated onto a set of orthogonal base band carrier tones which are then used to angle modulate (54) the RF Carrier. Transmission and receiver methods are disclosed which utilize existing state-of-the-art Compatible Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (C-QUAM) AM Stereo phase modulation Exciter with small modification.
