    • A method is provided for transmitting control information in a digital audio broadcasting system. The method comprises the steps of transmitting a plurality of control bits in each of a plurality of control frames, wherein a first sequence of the control bits represents a transmission mode, and a second sequence of the control bits a control data synchronization word. The plurality of control bits can further include a third sequence of bits representative of an interleaver synchronizaton word. A method performed in a radio receiver for determining transmission mode and synchronization for a digital audio broadcasting signal is also provided. The method comprises the steps of receiving a plurality interleaver frames containing digital information, wherein each of the interleaver frames includes a plurality control frames. The control frames include a plurality of control bits, wherein a first sequence of the control bits represents a transmission mode, a second sequence of the control bits a control data synchronization word. The plurality of control bits can further include a third sequence of bits representative of an interleaver synchronization word. The first sequence of control bits is processed to determine a transmission mode; the second sequence of control bits is processed to determine control data synchronization; and the third sequence of control bits is processed to determine interleaver boundaries. Radio frequency transmitters and receivers that utilize the above methods are also disclosed.

    • A digital signal transmission system is provided which minimizes the analog AM signal envelope distortion caused by multiple digitally modulated carriers in the same band as the analog AM signal. The present transmission system includes means for transmitting an amplitude modulated signal. Digital carriers for the digital signal are placed both above and below the frequency of the analog AM carrier. Certain digital carriers that are above the frequency of the analog AM carrier have an associated digital carrier that is at an equal frequency offset below the analog AM carrier. The data and modulation placed on the upper digital carrier and its counterpart are such that the signal resulting from their addition has no component that is in-phase with the analog AM carrier. Digital carrier pairs arranged in this way are said to be complementary. This configuration delivers dramatic fidelity improvements to analog AM reception of AM compatible digital braodcast signals. An additional means of reducing envelope distorsion is to predistort the signal envelope. The signal envelope is predistorted to counteract the distortion added by the digital carriers.

    • The invention provides a method and apparatus for demodulating a composite AM DAB waveform which contains digitally modulated carriers and which employ a mixer (180) for converting a received signal (170) into two signals, the first of these signals represents an in-phase component and the second of the signals represents a quadrature component, two analog-to-digital converters (182, 184) for converting the two signals into digital signals, and two fast Fourier transform elements (188, 190) for extracting data separately from the two digital signals. Complementary digital carrier signals are recovered from the quadrature, and non-complementary digital carriers are derived from a sum of the complementary data and the output of the in-phase component FFT process. Leakage of the AM signal through a highpass filter (186) is prevented from interfering with the demodulation of the complementary carrier signal's use of separated demodulation channels.
