    • Apparatuses (100) for driving loads (200) receive input signals in first, normal situations and provide first output signals to series arrangements of the loads (200) and rechargeable sources (300) to feed the loads (200) and charge the sources (300) with input power provided via the input signals. In second, emergency situations, converters (11-13) convert source signals from the sources (300) into second output signals destined for the loads (200) to feed the loads (200) with source power provided by the sources (300). The converters (11-13) may comprise converter-switches (11) and inductors (12) and diodes (13), and, in first modes of the converter-switches (11), couple the inductors (12) and the sources (300) for charging the inductors (12) via the source signals. In second modes of the converter-switches (11), the inductors (12), after being charged, provide the second output signals. The converters (11-13) may further regulate values of the first output signals. Load- switches (21) may de-activate the loads (200) and source-switches (31) may bypass the sources (300).

    • A lighting power monitoring system detects the availability of a normal or abnormal mains supply at a mains input (5) to enable activation of an emergency lighting mode in dependence thereon. The system includes a low-pass filter (21) coupled to the mains input (5) for producing a low-pass filtered output (23). Emergency lighting mode detection means (25) is arranged to generate a status signal "Out" indicative of the normal or abnormal status of the mains input. The status signal can be applied to an electronic controller (15) to control a lighting system in an optimised way in dependence upon whether the mains supply is normal or abnormal. A normal mains supply may be an AC mains supply and an abnormal mains supply may be a mains supply which includes a DC component.

    • A light fitting is provided with a first connector piece arranged to support a light and provide power thereto, and an input connected to a power source and arranged to provide a power signal to an output comprising a primary coil. The primary coil is also operable to transmit a switch signal and the power signal is non-zero irrespective of the switch signal. A light is provided comprising a sealed light housing, a light source, a back-up battery, a controller and a second connector piece having a secondary coil. The secondary coil also receives the switch signal and the controller controls power delivery to the light source in response to the switch signal thereby to turn the light on and off. The light fitting and the light are arranged to present the primary coil and the secondary coil for inductive coupling therebetween.
