    • It is known to display a cursor field of variable magnitude notably for accentuating text segments on a display screen. No separate symbol is reproduced in this cursor field. On the other hand, it is also known to display a cursor symbol in a cursor field, where the areas of the cursor field outside the symbol are generally suppressed. The position of this field can be controlled, but the magnitude is always fixed. The shape of the cursor symbol is often stored in a random access memory so that it can be readily modified. For the display of also a cursor symbol of variable magnitude, the invention proposes to address the cursor memory by means of a separate addressing device which operates only during display of the cursor field. The organization of the memory for the cursor symbol, customarily constructed as a matrix memory, then becomes fully independent of the rows and columns of the cursor field, i.e. to the cursor symbol the memory appears as a pure linear memory. As a result, this memory can be utilized in a substantially improved manner and the display of even large cursor symbols requires only a limited storage capacity.

    • An ergonomic housing for a computer mouse helpful in minimizing the occurrence and alleviating the symptoms of repetitive strain injuries is disclosed. The mouse housing includes a palm support area (22) having a hump (24) which is an asymmetrically skewed bulge about which a user's hand may pivot. The palm support area also includes a tapered tail (26) for supporting the hand and wrist off the surface. The housing includes at least one button which is elevated and angled to minimize flexion of and accompanying stress on the tendons of the finger. A thumb support (30) is also provided to allow the thumb to rest off the surface and to aid in lifting the mouse.

    • Disclosed is an improved user interface for a data processing system, particularly well suited for portable systems configured for donning by a user. A preferred embodiment includes a multifunction wristwatch (14) having a limited display (20) and a single switch (22) for switching between a display state and a data state. Once in the data state, data input, editing and retrieval may be effectuated by deliberate user motion actuation (28) or at least one non-contact sensor (24), for example of the light sensitive or sonic sensitive variety, in accordance with displayed menu options and functions. System logic advantageously may include help messages as well as an edit facility with integral character data sets individually selectable by rotating and non-rotating methods and combinations thereof to facilitate data input.
