    • This invention concerns a smartcard terminal, that is a device that is able to read information from a smartcard and write information to a smartcard. The terminal includes a smartcard reader and a data assembly and transmissions means to receive position data from a computer display pointing device having a serial communications capability, and from the smartcard reader. The data assembly and transmission means is able to transmit position information from the pointing device, and smartcard information from the smartcard reader to an associated computer, and to receive information which is to be written to the smartcard from the computer. The data assembly and transmission means assemble position information and smartcard information into separate frames before transmitting them serially, and it labels each frame depending on whether it contains position information or smartcard information. A smartcard terminal is typically provided as a peripheral for a computer, such as a personal computer, a workstation, a network server or a network computer.

    • The identity authentication system (Figure 8) employs biometric technology to ensure the integrity of electronic transactions and networks. Positioned at the center of the system is a wireless device (15), which includes a biometric sensor (20) that captures one or more biometric properties when touched. When fingerprint sensors are used, the sensors are positioned in the stylus grip (30), one sensor for the index finger, and a second sensor for the thumb. In one variation, one-to-one biometric matching is used. Each participant carries a wireless device that includes an encrypted biometric for reference purposes to gain access into the system. Processing is simplified since the system needs only to make a "MATCH" or "NO MATCH" decision. In a second variation that is particularly useful in controlled environments, one-to many biometric matching is used. During each event access request, the community of the reference prints is searched for a match with the applicant. Each member of the community needs to carry nothing on one's person to participate in the system. In either variation, the stylus is either attached to each site or is portable, one such stylus being carried by each participant.

    • A data storage device (5) having a storage capacity of at least 8Mbyte is surrounded by a housing including a stylus portion (23), having a tip (25) for indicating a position. The stylus includes a position sensing device for generating position data indicative of the position of stylus. The stylus further includes wireless communication means for transmitting and/or receiving data for storage, and also transmitting the position data. The position sensing device may be an accelerometer. Alternatively, it may be a laser-reading head (243), for generating a signal based on received reflections from an emitted laser beam (245).
