    • A system and method for conducting a monetary transaction among a Point-Of-Purchase ("POP") device (102), a mobile device (104) and a certifying authority (108) is provided. The POP device (102) may provide goods/services. A short-range wireless link (110) is established between the POP device (102) and the mobile device (104), and a long-range wireless link (112) is established between the mobile device and the certifying authority (108). The POP device (102) provides its identity and prices for its goods/services to the mobile device (104). After a particular good/service is selected, the mobile device (104) provides its identity and certain information to the certifying authority (108). The POP device (102) then receives the certain information back from the certifying authority (108) via the mobile device (104) and an associated digital signature generated by the certifying authority. If the digital signature is authenticated, the POP device (102) dispenses the selected good/service.

    • A medicament dispensing cabinet is comprised of a frame, at least one controller, and a plurality of drawers each movably carried by the frame and each defining a plurality of dispensing cells. A plurality of removable dispensing devices is provided with each one carried by one of the dispensing cells. Each of the dispensing cells further comprises a motor for providing rotary motion to one of the removable dispensing devices in response to the controller, a sensor operating in conjunction with the controller for counting medicament dispensed from one of the removable dispensing devices, a chute for receiving medicament dispensed from one of the removable dispensing devices and a chute gate for controlling access to the chute. The cabinet may additionally comprise a chute gate release responsive to the controller for controlling the chute gate and a chute gate sensor connected to the controller and responsive to the position of the chute gate. The cabinet may be used in conjunction with a number of processes including dispensing, secure-pickup (insuring the person picking up the dispensed medicament is authorized to do so), back-end verification (verifying the identity of the person picking up the dispensed medicament), a process for removing a dispensing device from a drawer, and a process for inserting a dispensing device into a drawer.

    • An article handling apparatus embodied, for example, as a vending machine, includes a controllably positioned hose dispenser for retrieving articles from an article storage area. A hose is continuous from a first end located within a hose storage area, where the hose receives article securing energy (e.g., suction), to a second end adapted to secure to and extract a selected article from the storage area. A hose positioning mechanism coupled to the hose controllably positions the second end of the hose so as to be aligned with a given article stored in the storage area, for controllably contacting and extracting the selected article from the storage area, and controllably positioning the second end of the hose so as to transport the article to a dispensing area. The hose positioning mechanism imparts both a storage requirement and a retraction requirement on the hose as a result of the controllable positioning. In accordance with the principles of the present invention a single hose storage area is provided in the vending machine for meeting all of the hose storage and retraction requirements.
