    • The invention relates to a safety element (1), which is embedded in a plastic layer composite and which comprises reflective, optically variable surface patterns (11), which can be visually detected from predetermined directions of observation, and which are formed from a mosaic of surface elements (12;13;14) occupied by optically effective structures. Part of the surface pattern (11) is additionally covered with a regularly arranged grid (18) of individual cells (15). Each individual cell (15) is occupied by a single element surface (16) or a group of identical partial surfaces (17), wherein the element surfaces (16) and the partial surfaces (17) contain optically effective structures which are independent from the surface pattern mosaic. The arrangement of the element surfaces (16) and the partial surfaces (17) in the grid (18) form hidden information which cannot be perceived by the naked eye, in the form of graphic or alphanumeric signs. Said signs are, however, reproduced in a colour photocopy with a colour or grey value contrast produced as an artefact during copying which can be perceived by the naked eye. The grid (18) has at least five individual cells (15) per millimetre. The element surfaces (16) and the group of partial surfaces (17) occupy an identical surface area from between 40 % to 70 % of the individual cell (15).
