    • A reflective matrix mirror visible to infrared converter light valve (5) includes a liquid crystal medium (60) for spatially modulating an incident infrared beam by polarization rotation, a photosubstrate (30) for receiving an incident visible wavelength image (115) and for controlling the polarization rotation of the liquid crystal medium (60) responsively to the visible image (115), and a reflective matrix mirror (40). The reflective matrix mirror (40) is positioned between the liquid crystal medium (60) and the photosubstrate (30) and reflects the incident infrared beam (125) back through the liquid crystal medium (60) such that the infrared beam (125) passes through the liquid crystal medium twice and is polarization rotated responsively to the visible wavelength image (115). A polarizer (90) positioned exteriorly of the liquid crystal medium (60) converts the polarization rotation of the infrared beam (125) into output intensity modulation to produce an infrared image (130). The reflective matrix mirror (40) comprises an M x N array of infrared reflective islands comprising metallic or semiconductor/metallic compounds.

    • The invention provides optical modulation devices and displays of the DHFLC type having a high contrast. Said modulation devices comprise a first substrate and a second substrate which are positioned substantially parallel to each other and which are provided, on their facing surfaces, with, in succession, an electrode layer and an orientation layer. This advantageous effect is achieved by using different orientation layers, the surface energy of the orientation layer of the first substrate being different from the surface energy of the orientation layer of the second substrate, said difference in surface energy being at least 5 mN/m. The orientation layer having the high surface energy is preferably made from rubbed polyimide, and the orientation layer having the low surface energy is preferably made from unrubbed polyorganosilsesquioxane. The optically active layer of the modulation devices in accordance with the invention exhibits a "tilted-bookshelf" structure.

    • The eyes (12) of vehicle's (18) occupants are shaded from the direct or reflected rays of the sun (14) shining through a transparent windshield (16). The system includes a normally transparent envelope (20) which is adjacent to the windshield (16). A layer of normally transparent activatable liquid crystal material, which is adapted to have its light transmissive characteristics selectively changed in response to an electric field, is carried by the sheet. A device (42) for determining the position of the sun sends signals to communicate the position of the sun (14) relative to the windshield (16).
