    • A method for reconstructing (138) a selected wavefield at a designated common midpoint and offset location (132) from a set of prestack seismic data traces (126). The method uses actual data traces from other common midpoint and offset locations to reconstruct the selected wavefield at the designated reconstruction location. The method may be used to reconstruct any selected wavefield, including both primary reflection wavefields and secondary wavefields such as water-bottom multiple wavefields, and may be used with both 2-D and 3-D seismic data. If the reconstructed wavefield is a secondary wavefield, it may be subtracted from the restack seismic data traces to eliminate interference between wavefields. The method may also be used to reconstruct data from missing shots to avoid spatial aliasing problems in other data processing operations.

    • A physical attribute migration method for a medium is disclosed. The method comprises forming at least one collection of seismic traces associated with an area of the medium and classified according to a predetermined criterion, and a stack section is produced on the basis of said seismic trace collection using a stacking speed field related to said area. According to the method, (a) the product of a term related to the trace amplitude and a term related to the stacking speeds is determined; (b) the amplitude data and the product are migrated at an initial migration speed to give a migrated amplitude image and a migrated product image, respectively; (c) a ratio is established between the migrated product image data and the migrated amplitude image data to give a migrated position speed; and (d) steps (b) and (c) are iterated in such a way that the migration speed of each iteration is the same as the migrated position speed from the preceding iteration, until the deviation between the migrated position speed of the final iteration (n) and that of the penultimate iteration (n-1) is below a predetermined threshold.

    • A method for removing sinusoidal noise without affecting the response of the formation means that the actual formation responses of the logging tools are recovered, and the logs can be used quantitatively. Removal of sinusoidal noise from a log is accomplished in three steps. First, the log is reduced to a zero-mean, stationary series. Second, the wavenumber of the sinusoidal noise is identified by its peak in the Fourier amplitude spectrum (18). And third, the noise is removed by applying a zero-phase notch filter (46). In order to preserve the quantitative data integrity, the low wavenumber trend is kept. Preserving the quantitative data integrity is accomplished by approximating the log with a least-squares cubic spline which retains the overall log character, ignoring the sinusoidal noise. A zero mean stationary series is formed by subtracting the least-squares cubic spline from the data. The remaining steps, Fourier analysis and filtering are performed on the difference series. Recombining the filtered series with the spline restores the log data without the sinusoidal noise.
