    • The proposal is for a novel, simple, reversible actinometer for measuring the solar radiation in the erythema-active u/v-B range between 280 and 320 nm based on the combination of a phototropic material (glass or plastic) with a filter which is transparent in the u/v-B and visible spectra but selectively masks out the intermediate u/v-A range which thus does not affect the indication. As an alternative to the combination of a phototropic material and a selective filter layer it is also possible to use a coloured layer or plastic which selectively discolours under u/v-B radiation as the indication field. Advantages of the actinometer of the invention include the fact that it can be used repeatedly, its rapid and adequately accurate indication, its passive mode of operation and its low price. Such an actinometer allows the user to read off the intensity of the u/v-B radiation at any time, relate it to further relevant data, e.g. the type of skin and the protection factor of the product used, find the still safe exposure time and thus prevent the occurrence of sunburn and resultant skin lesions.
