    • A gas cutoff system for use with a gas-operated firearm (F). The gas cutoff system includes a gas block (10) affixed to the barrel (12) and having a plurality of openings adjacent the barrel (12) for receiving gas redirected from the barrel (12) of the firearm (F) upon firing. At least one gas cylinder (26) is disposed within the gas block (10) and includes a piston (24) disposed within and moveable along the gas cylinder (26). A valve assembly is disposed within the gas cylinder (26) adjacent to the at least one piston (24). The valve assembly includes a selectively closeable valve (20) that can be actuated upon firing of the firearm (F) when the volume/pressure of gas entering the gas block (10) through the plurality of openings overcomes a biasing force of a spring (18) so as to actuate movement of the valve (20) within the gas cylinder (26). A portion of the valve (20) is moved to a location blocking the openings through which the gas is entering the gas block (10) to prevent excess gas from entering the gas operating system.

    • A gas operating system (22) for a firearm (20) renders the firearm (20) capable of firing a wide range of shot loads by passively or automatically compensating for different shot loads. The firearm (20) includes a plurality of ports (38) formed in the firearm barrel (24), and corresponding ports (36) formed in a gas block (42) of the gas operating system (22). The ports (38) tap gases generated during firing which are used to cycle the firearm. When firing different cartridge loads, differing combinations of the ports (38) are selectively at least partially blocked or otherwise obstructed by the cartridge casing according to the size of the cartridge. Additionally, the gas operating system (22) includes compensating gas pistons (46) with internal relief valves (80) that can bleed off excess gas to compensate for larger shot loads regardless of the size of the cartridge.

    • A recoil control mechanism for a weapon which fires a projectile which is characterised by the generation of a forward counterforce to the rearward recoil simultaneously with absorption of rearward recoil force upon initiation of propoulsion of the projectile. The forward counterforce is generated by propelling a first mass forwardly upon firing the projectile and substantially simultaneously propelling a second mass rearwardly for absorbing some of the recoil force. In one mechanism (10), the first mass may be the weapon's barrel (12) and the second mass its breach block (14). Expaning gases (36) from detonation of propellant in cartridge (24) enter a reaction volume (28) between the barrel (12) and breech block (14). These gases drive barrel (12) forwardly against force transmission spring (16) to impose a forward counterforce on the weapon's frame (18). Substantially simultaneously recoil from detonation of cartridge (22) together with the gasses (36) in reaction volume (28) drive breech block (14) rearwardly against force absorbing spring (20).
