    • The safety coupling (10) comprises: a first coupling part (12) and a second coupling part (14) which are arranged coaxially with each other so as to rotate about a same axis of rotation (x) and are provided with respective front teeth (20, 62); and torque- sensitive releasing means (44, 64, 70, 72) designed to uncouple the first coupling part and second coupling part, thus interrupting the transmission of the torque, when the torque transmitted between the two coupling parts exceeds a given maximum torque value. The torque-sensitive releasing means include: a plunger (44) which is permanently connected for rotation with the second coupling part and is slidable along the axis of rotation between a normal working position, in which it ensures that the two coupling parts are coupled for rotation with each other, and a safety position, in which it uncouples the two coupling parts; a pressure chamber (64) filled with incompressible fluid such as to apply on the plunger a force tending to keep the plunger in the normal working position; and valve means (70, 72) adapted to allow the fluid to be discharged from the pressure chamber, and hence the plunger to be moved from the normal working position to the safety position when the pressure of the fluid in the pressure chamber exceeds a given maximum pressure value, the maximum torque value being linked to the maximum pressure value. The front teeth are first front teeth (20) provided on the first coupling part and second front teeth (62) provided on the plunger, which teeth directly mesh with each other when the plunger (44) is in the normal working position.

    • Device (200) for releasing fluid pressure from the pressure chamber of an overload clutch (A) is disclosed including a valve (210) captured in a radial cavity (202) in the cylinder (10) of the overload clutch (A) between a shoulder (204) and a valve cover (212) held by a snap ring (226). The valve cover (212) includes an aperture (228) for receiving a ball (230) and allowing the ball (230) to move radially inwardly to push against the spool member (220) of the valve (210) to unseat its head (221) from a seat (218) but preventing the ball (230) from moving out of the valve cover (212). The ball (230) rolls on a valve actuator (232) mounted to the piston (22). When the cylinder (10) and piston (22) are axially separated by fluid pressure, the ball (230) is located in a detent (234) formed in the valve actuator (232) such that the head (221) of the spool member (220) seals with the seat (218) and prevents release of fluid pressure from the pressure chamber. When the cylinder (10) and the piston (22) move axially against the normal bias direction of the fluid pressure, the ball (230) rolls out of the detent (234) and pushes against the spool member (220) to unseat the head (221) from the valve seat (218). In the most preferred form, the valve actuator (232) is adjustably mounted to the piston (22) by a turnbuckle (238), with the valve actuator (232) and the turnbuckle (238) formed of hexagonal stock for receipt in a wrench.

    • A clutch arrangement for rapid disengagement of two elements in a transmission system when a chosen torque is exceeded. The one element is a conical shaft-end which carries a corresponding sleeve (1). The sleeve carries externally at its ends two mutually separated ball bearings (5) and a force transmission ring (20) disposed therebetween. An annular force transmission body (7) surrounds and is carried by the ball bearings and includes a pressurisable hydraulic chamber which when pressurised through the medium of a valve on said body causes a reduction in the diameter of the inner surface of the body (7) so that said body will be brought into force transmitting engagement with the outer surface of the ring. The sleeve (1) carries a dogging element (14) which is adapted to act on an element (10) carried by the body (7) for depressurising the hydraulic chamber (8) upon relative rotation between the body (7) and the sleeve (1). The arrangement is such that the ring (20) and the body (7) will pass free from each other in the pressureless state of the hydraulic chamber (8). The ring (20) is operatively connected to the sleeve, so that relative rotation between the clutch components will take place between the ring and the body when the clutch is triggered.

    • A hydraulic coupling (10) for use in motor vehicle driveline applications to limit speed differentiation and transfer drive torque between two rotary members. The hydraulic coupling includes a multi-plate clutch assembly (22) operably connecting the two relatively rotatable members, and a sealed actuator assembly (20) for actuating the clutch assembly (22) in response to the magnitude of speed differentiation between the two rotary members. The actuator assembly (20) includes a hydraulic pump (24) and a piston (70) which are sealed relative to the clutch assembly (22). The sealed actuator assembly (20) includes an internal recirculation path for supplying hydraulic fluid retained therein between a low pressure supply chamber (130) at the inlet side of the hydraulic pump (24) and a high pressure piston chamber (72) provided at the discharge side of the hydraulic pump (24). Hydraulic pressure in the piston chamber (72) controls the magnitude of the clutch engagement force exerted by the piston (70) on the clutch assembly (22). As a further feature, the recirculation path includes a flow restrictor (146) which provides a bleed flow path for supplying high pressure fluid from the piston chamber (72) to the supply chamber (130) following cessation of the pumping action to release the clutch assembly (22).
