    • A mining machine includes a frame, a boom supported for pivoting movement relative to the frame, and a cutter head pivotably coupled to the boom. The cutter head includes a housing, a cutter shaft coupled to the housing, a cutting disc, and an excitation mechanism. A second portion of the cutter shaft extends parallel to a cutter axis. The cutting disc is coupled to the second portion of the cutter shaft and is supported for free rotation relative to the cutter shaft about the cutter axis. The cutting disc includes a plurality of cutting bits defining a cutting edge. The excitation mechanism includes an exciter shaft and a mass eccentrically coupled to the cutter shaft. The excitation mechanism is coupled to the first portion of the cutter shaft. Rotation of the exciter shaft induces oscillating movement of the second portion of the cutter shaft and the cutting disc.

    • An articulated pre-skimmer mount for a pre-skimmer associated with a drill bit feed unit comprises a feed mounting arm mounted to the drill bit feed unit. A first end is configured for attachment to the drill feed unit and a second end includes a cylindrical mounting shaft and an axial positioning plate. An intermediate arm has a first end comprising a cylindrical sleeve mounted thereto. The cylindrical sleeve has an inner cylindrical opening configured for sliding engagement with the cylindrical mounting shaft and a mating plate configured for locking, face-to-face engagement with the axial positioning plate. A second end comprises a pre-skimmer mounting assembly configured for attachment to the pre-skimmer, wherein an axial positioning plate and a mating plate are operable to disengage, for rotation of the intermediate arm about an axis of the feed mounting arm for alignment of the pre-skimmer.

    • This invention relates to an improved rock or earth penetrating device and method that applies to drilling bits, tunnel boring machines, or micro-tunneling, and block cutting devices. The disclosed invention takes advantage of the fact that the tensile strength of a rock is significantly lower than its compressive strength. The invention combines abrasive rock/earth cutting with direct tension rock/earth cutting. First, narrow grooves or kerfs (16) are cut into the rock/earth by circular cutting elements (103). Next, rolling elements (101) roll inside the kerfs (16) providing normal forces against the kerf walls (19). The ridges (18) between adjacent kerfs are broken under the tensile stresses induced by these normal forces. The wastes produced during cutting are flushed away with a cooling or drilling fluid. The embodiments of the novel drill bit are described: the first one relates to the destructive drilling of a borehole; the second one relates to a core bit used to obtain an intact core sample; and the third relates to the extraction of large blocks of stone from quarries.
