    • The present invention provides a ballasted armour unit (1) for use in construction for preventing coastal erosion. The armour unit (4) is formed from a material such as concrete or a plastics material, having a significant proportion of denser inclusions (7, 9) embedded in it. The inclusions are preferably steel bars, such as scrap rail sections, or smaller scrap metal particles may be used. In a preferred embodiment, the armour unit (1) is T-shaped. In this way, a number of the units can be interlocked to form a layer of a sea defence having no substantially straight into-unit joint extending from one side of the sea defence to the other.

Date Nov. 3, 1988.A wave-dissipating caission includes a box-shaped skeleton made up of ridge members, wherein wing members are provided. Each wing member is in the form of a trapezoid with one end thereof separated from other wing members, and an opposite end joined to other wing members. The method for producing the caisson includes the steps of providing a mold for a bottom plate portion of the caission, depositing reinforced concrete into the mold for forming the bottom plate portion, and installing a plurality of steel rods onto the bottom plate portion. The method for producing the caission further includes the step of erecting wing frames, right and left side frames, front and back frames, and an upper frame around the plurality of steel rods. Concrete is then deposited into the frames, thereby forming the caission within the frames. Then the frames are removed from the formed caission.

    • The block is characterized in that it is comprised of a central core (1) of substantially cubic form having on one hand two lateral faces (12) opposite to each other and each provided with a lateral leg (2) in the form of an anvil, the tables (20) of said anvils being parallel to each other and to said opposite lateral faces, the inclined sides (22) of said anvils bearing onto the apparent lateral faces (11) and opposite to the core, and on the other hand two front faces (13) each provided with a front leg (3) in a four sided pyramidal trunk, two (22) of these opposite faces bearing, overlapping on the sides (21) of the anvils and the two other opposite faces (31) having their bases at least partially in common with one side of the apparent lateral face adjacent to the core. Application particularly to the protection of harbour breakwaters.

    • An expandable, adaptable aquatic life enhancement device/artificial reef is assembled from variously shaped modular panels (10) quickly and easily, on location, using hand tools. In a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the modular panels (10) are constructed of a resinous non-toxic, non-corrodible material, and are of a size and weight which allows as few as two men to handle the modular panels. The device can be used as a refuge for fish, wherein it may be constructed as a shell and have a plurality of fish/water entry-exist holes (13) therein to allow fish to take refuge therein. It may also be used as an oyster reef, wherein external flanges (151) are used to attach the modular panel together, and also provide ledges on which the oysters can grow and develop. Moreover, the device can double as a breakwater.

    • Shore erosion control structure has a plurality of block members (3) laid on a beach along a shoreline to form a wall (1) having a plurality of parallel rows and vertical courses. Each of the block members (3) has substantially horizontal, seaward facing openings within which are spaced apart baffles (17). The baffles (17) are removably accommodated in the openings so as to be adjustable and provide tortuous passages through the wall (1) through which water and entrained sand may flow. Water containing entrained sand flowing through the tortuous passages has its energy dissipated so as to enable the entrained sand to be deposited at the landward and seaward sides of the wall (1), as well as in the openings through the block members, thereby preventing the erosion of the beach and, in many cases, enabling restoration of beaches that have been eroded.
