The press has a framework including two side frames (6) in parallel relationship to each other, one located on the drive side of the machine and the other one on the tender side of the machine. Each side frame has a first vertical column (7) upstream of the press nip and a second vertical column (8) downstream of the press nip. The upper roll (1) is carried by a bracket (10) extending between the upstream and downstream vertical columns (7, 8). The brackets have bevelled ends (33) that co-operate with inclined surfaces (32) of plate members (31) on the vertical columns.

    • A press belt in the form of an endless loop includes crosswise and lengthwise reinforcing fibers.     • An apparatus (10) includes a forming section (12) for forming a web (W) from stock. The apparatus (10) also includes a press section (14) which is disposed downstream relative to the forming section (12) for removing a portion of water from the formed web (W). The press section (14) includes a suction pick-up roll (18) disposed downstream relative to the forming section (12) for picking up the formed web (W) from the forming section (12). A press felt (20) extends around the suction pick-up roll (18) such that in use of the apparatus (10), the formed web (W) is picked up from the forming section (12) and is supported by the press felt (20). An extended nip press (22) is disposed downstream relative to the pick-up means (16). The press (22) includes a rotatable backing roll (24) and a pressing shoe (26) which cooperates with the backing roll (24) for defining therebetween an elongate pressing section (28). A bearing blanket (30) movably extends through the pressing section (28) with the blanket (30) cooperating with the suction pick-up roll (18) such that the formed web (W) is transferred from the press felt (20) to the blanket (30). The apparatus (10) also includes a dryer section (32) which includes a rotatable dryer (34) having a heated surface (36) which cooperates with the blanket (30) such that the pressed web (W) is transferred from the blanket (30) to the heated surface (36) of the dryer (34). A dryer felt (38) extends around a portion (40) of the heated surface (36) which is disposed downstream relative to the blanket (30) such that the web (W) is sandwiched between the dryer felt (38) and the dryer (34).

A first and second plurality of barbs (40, 42) extend from the first and the second channels (32, 34) respectively such that the first plurality of barbs (40) extend towards and engage the first lateral edge (20) of the blanket (18) and are disposed on the opposite surface (26) of the blanket (18) relative to the first seal (36). The second plurality of barbs (42) extend towards and engage the second lateral edge (22) of the blanket (18). The second plurality of barbs (42) are disposed on the opposite surface (26) of the blanket (18) relative to the second seal (38) so that during use of the apparatus (10), lateral movement of the edges (20, 22) of the blanket (18) relative to the heads (28, 30) is inhibited.

    • The grooves of a grooved press belt are formed with an improved configuration which reduces groove closure under pressure and which reduces cracking and tearing of the belt. The improved groove configuration consists of a curved bottom (20) and two upwardly diverging side walls (22). In a first embodiment the bottom wall is semi-circular and has a diameter (D) which is equal to about one half of the width (W) of the groove opening. The upwardly diverging side walls (22) preferably include radiused upper edges (24). The side walls (22) preferably have an angle of divergence between about five degrees and about fifteen degrees from a vertical plane. In a second embodiment, the bottom of the groove is substantially flat, and the bottom corners are radiused to provide a smooth transition between the flat bottom and the upwardly diverging side walls.

The arrangement is such that the pocket (28) is filled with lubricant (26) flowing from the concave surface (18) so that in the event of a wad of the web entering into the extended nip (16), the wad is yieldingly received within the pocket (28) so that damage to the blanket (20) by the wad is minimized.
