    • A papermaking machine has a stock manifold or headbox which is tapered in the machine direction. Paper stock flows through a bank of tubes (18) from the stock manifold to a slice for injecting stock onto a forming wire (12). Each tube in the tube bank (18) extends in a plane which is substantially parallel to the direction of motion of the paper web being formed. The tubes are connected to the interior of the headbox manifold along a stock supply wall. A plurality of supply conduits (36) are connected to the supply wall and discharge emollients such as chemicals and fillers into the manifold where they are immediately drawn, together with the stock, into adjacent tube ends which feed the stock and added chemicals to the slice for forming a paper web.

    • An arrangement (2) for feeding stock to a headbox (1) in a papermaking machine, which comprises at least one stock header (3) with an inlet for receiving stock into the header and a plurality of stock header outlets (5) permitting stock to leave the header. For each stock header outlet (5) there is a stock conduit (7, 8, 9) downstream of the stock header outlet permitting stock to pass from the stock header outlet (5), through the conduit (7, 8, 9) to the inlet of the headbox. The arrangement includes a dilution header (30) for feeding a diluent such as water to a plurality of stock conduits. The dilution header has an inlet (31) for receiving a diluent into the dilution header (30) and a plurality of outlets (32) permitting the diluent to leave the dilution header. For each dilution header outlet (32), there is a diluent conduit (33) permitting the passage of a diluent from the dilution header (30) into a stock conduit (7, 8, 9). According to the invention, the diluent is fed into a stock conduit (7, 8, 9) at a location immediately downstream of a stock header outlet (5) and the stock header together with the stock header outlets (5) is designed such that the velocity of the stock flowing through the stock header (3a, 3b, 3c) is substantially equal to the velocity of the stock in an upstream end (10, 11, 12) of the stock conduits (7, 8, 9).

    • A basis weight control apparatus (10) is disclosed for controlling the cross-machine direction basis weight of a stream of stock (S) ejected from a headbox (12) onto a forming wire (14). The apparatus includes a plurality of conduits (18-22) with each conduit defining an outlet nozzle (24-28) disposed adjacent to a slice lip (30) of the headbox (12) and spaced relative to each adjacent nozzle in a cross-machine direction (CD). The conduits (18-22) are connected to a source of pressurized air (32). A plurality of control valves (34-38) are arranged with each valve (34-38) cooperating with a corresponding conduit (18-22) for controlling a flow of pressurized air (40) to each nozzle. A control device (42) is connected to the valves (34-38) for controlling the valves such that a flow of air to each of the nozzles (24-28) is permitted for controlling the cross-machine basis weight of the stream of stock (S). The arrangement is such that when the flow of air (40) through one of the nozzles is increased, the basis weight of the stream of stock (S) in the vicinity of the one nozzle is correspondingly reduced so that the basis weight of the stream of stock in a cross-machine direction is selectively controlled.
