    • An apparatus and process for forming a combined glass strand (42) from a plurality of individual glass strands is disclosed. The individual strands (24,26,28,30,32) are dispensed from a plurality of rear packages (14,16,18,20,22) formed of strands and fed into an eyelet (34) that collects the strands and orients the strands into linearly extending, parallel configurations to form a collected strand (40). The collected strand (40) is passed through an interior opening of a front package (10) containing a glass strand supply (41) that is applied from an interior surface of the front package to the exterior surface of the collected strand (40) in a spiral manner to form a ply around the collected strand, thereby creating a combined glass strand (42) having interlocked individual strands within the combined strand. This combined strand may be wound by a downstream winder (38). A guard (50) may be positioned downstream of each package to restrict movement of the strands outside the confines of the package.

    • A self-supporting package of strand is disclosed. The disclosed method of manufacturing a package of strand (40) is directed to the bulk collection of the strand. The disclosed strand collection system includes an attenuator (100) that attenuates filaments (20) from a bushing. The attenuator includes a pair of belts (112, 132) between which the strand is pinched to pull the filaments from the bushing. The attenuator directs the strand to a deflector assembly (200) that slows down and imparts a degree of movement to the strand. The deflector assembly includes primary and secondary deflector surfaces (222, 214) which the strand engages. After the strand deflects off the secondary deflector surface, it is directed into a container assembly (300). The attenuator and deflector assembly traverse above the container assembly to deposit the strand. The container assembly is periodically vibrated by a vibrating mechanism (400) as it collects strand. The vibrations settle and shift the strand in the container assembly for better strand distribution. The container assembly includes an outer container (310) with perforations (336) through which air and water can flow to remove moisture from the package. The container assembly also includes an inner container (370) that provides support during the shipping of the package after the outer container is removed. After the strand has filled the container assembly, the container assembly and strand is dielectrically dried. The package (500) may include intra-package splices (698) of the strand if the strand breaks during the collection process. The strand collection system couples filaments or strands together to reduce or eliminate slippage of the strands when they are pulled from the package. The links are referred to as authentic links. When the strands have been coupled, the strands are easily and accurately run out of the package.
