    • In a process for producing mouldings, in particular particle boards, at least one binding agent is mixed with a least one fine-particle basic material extruded at high temperature and pressure. The basic material has, or is brought to, a total content of 6 to 25 wt.%. It is extruded, together with at least one biopolymer, preferably a binding agent containing starch which can be converted to molten and/or gel form at least at the extrusion temperature and pressure, and the fine-particle material. Immediately after extrusion, the pressure is relieved by spontaneous expansion. The device for implementing the process comprises extrusion machines (2, 20) for starting components in lump form. These machines have an extrusion nozzle (26, 260) and an upstream processing region (204) where the basic material to be processed is partially pressure relieved by internal partial expansion. The extruded mouldings have a compact surface and a basic material in which particles of a fine-particle fibrous material are distributed throughout a matrix containing numerous minute voids. The fraction of starch-containing matrix is equal to 5 to 85 wt.%.

    • The process involves the following steps: humidification of the material through exposure to saturated steam; crushing; drying out during preliminary heating until thermoplasticity is attained while the material is being transported in a closed vessel; pressing in an extrusion press; and gradual cooling with preliminary seasoning in an insulated vessel. The production line comprises the following elements: a hopper (1); a device in the form of a steam pipe (2) for humidification; a crushing device (4); a means of transport (5) comprising two continuous conveyors (8 and 9) arranged in housings (10 and 11), in one of which water is removed from the material, while the other is used for drying and heating until thermal plasticity is attained; and an extrusion press (24) including a heating zone, a neutral zone and a cooling zone.

    • The invention relates to a material-compacting apparatus for use in a plant in which a rigid elongated element or beam (4) is manufactured from loose material (2) moistened with a binder. The apparatus comprises a compaction section (7) in which batches of loose material moistened with binder are compacted, a heating section (5) in which the compacted batches are dried, and a transport arrangement which functions to move each compacted material-batch (2b'', 2b''', 2a) through the heating section (5). The compaction section (7) has mounted therein a rod-like member (23) whose end surface, or cross-sectional surface, is such that the member (23) will compact the foremost material-batch and hold the batch such that the foremost material-batch (2a) will not tend to separate from a nearest following material-batch (2b''') when the walls (15) of the heating section are displaced.
