    • An insert for use in a ball nose end mill (1) is provided that includes an insert body (22) having a top wall (24), a bottom wall (28) and at least one arcuate side wall (30). An arcuate cutting edge (34) is defined at an intersection between the top and side walls that includes a plurality of sinusoidal undulations (36) for reducing cutting forces, and vibration, and enhancing the breaking and removal of chips removed from a workpiece (66) during a cutting operation. An end portion (67) of the insert crosses the axis of rotation (A) when the insert is mounted in the seat of an end mill body (3), and the undulations (36) reduce the considerable shear forces applied to the cutting edge (34) at this location. The cutting edge has a profile which follows the contour of a sphere to permit machining a rounded cut. The side wall (30) of the insert body includes an upper relief portion (44) disposed directly under the cutting edge, with a relief angle for preventing the undulations from making unwanted striations or tool marks in the sidewalls of the rounded cut.

    • A cutting insert (20) for use in a rotary milling tool (10) is provided. The cutting insert (20) includes an insert body including a bottom face (22), a top face (24) and a side face (26). A stepped cutting edge (20) is formed at the intersection of the top face (24) and the side face (26) for engaging a workpiece and removing a chip from it. The stepped cutting edge includes at least two offset edge portions (30a-c) which produce distinct, transversely-spaced chip segments during the cutting operation. The offset edge portions (30a-c) are connected by transition edge portions (30d-e) which are disposed at an obtuse angle with respect to the offset edge portions. The angle of the transition edge portions tends to spread the individual chip segments apart during the machining operation to effect a thinning of the chip between the individual chip segments. The entire cutting edge is helically curved so that the cutting edge lies on the surface of a circumscribing cylinder defined by the rotation of the cutting edge about the axis of the milling cutter.

    • The present invention relates to a tool for rotary chip removal machining. The tool comprises a cutting head (10), a retention means (11) and a shank (12). The cutting head (10) is provided with at least one cutting edge (27) which is integral with the cutting head. The cutting head and the retention means comprise overlapping asymmetrical means (15, 19) for mounting of the cutting head to the shank. The cutting head comprises two cutting edges (27), each major cutting edge (27) comprising a substantially straight edge (27A) and a convexly curved preferably part-circular edge (27B). The convex edge (27B) is provided radially outside the substantially straight edge (27A). The invention further relates to a cutting head for the tool.
