    • Methods, systems, and devices convert biomass from the field to provide heat, motive working gas, electrical energy, or fuel such that the biomass directly replaces or supplements liquid fossil fuels wherever these fuels may be used. The methods include procedures for harvesting the biomass, reducing it to a transportable form, purifying it and blending additives as necessary, and finally reducing the refined biomass to an explosible particle size distribution generally finer than 80 mesh for heating applications or 200 mesh for application in internal or external combustion engines. The present invention preferably includes transportation of the finished powder to storage units at the end user site, where the fuel is used by continuous delivery, metering, and dispersal in air to produce a continuous supply of an explosible fluid dispersion for direct energy conversion. Systems of automatic production for a variety of applications are also described.

    • Apparatus for conditioning plant material in the production of hay. The apparatus comprises a conditioning path (12) through which plant material can be passed to be subjected to compression for fracturing the stalks thereof. The conditioning path (12) has an intake end (21) and a discharge end (23). The conditioning path (12) is defined between two compression surfaces (26, 28), one of which is defined by an endless belt (25) moveable through a cyclic path about rollers (31, 32). The rollers (31, 32) are mounted on a common support (33). The compression surfaces (26, 28) are arranged for movement with respect to each other for varying the size of the intake end (21) relative to the discharge end (23). Typically, the common support (33) for the rollers (31, 32) comprises a beam (33) which is angularly moveable, and wherein control means (43) are provided for controlling angular movement of the beam (33).

    • A hay conditioning apparatus (20) includes a first roller (22) which is rotatably mounted in a fixed mounting and a second counter-rotating (compression) roller (24) which is rotatably mounted in connection with a moveable mounting (26). The compression roller (24) is in rolling contact with the first roller (22) and is adapted to receive pre-cut hay therebetween for conditioning. The moveable mounting (26) allows the second roller (24) to be displaced relative to the first roller (22) as the hay passes between the rollers (22, 24) and also includes a hydraulic cylinder (32) for applying a compression force to the compression roller (24). As the pre-cut hay passes between the rollers (22, 24), it is subjected to a predetermined compression force sufficient to substantially flatten any green nodes on the hay and thereby accelerate drying of the hay.
