摘要： A process is described for inertia bonding a hollow shaft (106, 137) made of superalloy materials without causing compressive deformation in the shaft due to the high compressive forces generated in the segmented collet (103, 124) which grips the shaft. A method is also described for minimizing the residual stress in an inertia bonded joint, where the wall thicknesses of the two shaft portions to be bonded are unequal, by independently controlling the gripping forces on the portions so as to provide equal diameter reduction during the bonding process. A method for converting a front loading inertia bonding machine (Fig. 2) to a rear loading bonding machine (Fig. 3) is also described.

摘要： The specification describes a tool arrangement and chuck apparatus for quick change of a range of tools. In particular, a quick change chuck adapted to engage various diameter drill bits, tools and tool holders. The tools are rotatable in a chuck or adaptor and have at one end a centreing shaft portion having a constant diameter for mulitple tool end diarneters and shapes, a drive shoulder portion and a lock portion in any order. The chucks are described as haying a tool cenerting arrangement for accomodating the constant diameter centering shaft. The chucks are also described as having tool bit release mechanism operable to disengage the tool from a retention mechanism when a force is applied inwards of the body of the chuck by the user to allow the tool bit to be removed longitudinally from the chuck but also arrange to allow the tool bit to be inserted longitudinally into the chuck without requiring any other user operation.

摘要： A hole-saw assembly including a hole-saw having at one end a plurality of cutting teeth and at the other end two shafts. The assembly includes a mandrel coaxially aligned with said hole-saw and including a body having two bores therethrough coaxially aligned with said shafts. An annulus located on top of the body is coaxially aligned with said mandrel and hole saw and includes two holes, the annulus rotatable around its longitudinal axis from a first to a second position. In the first position the annulus holes are aligned with the bores and shafts allowing the shafts to be freely insertable and removable and in the second position the holes are misaligned to lock the shafts to the annulus. Such an arrangement allows the hole-saw and the mandrel to be easily and quickly mountable and demountable.
