    • A rupture disk is provided for relieving pressure between the interior of a battery box and the exterior of the battery box, the box having an outlet opening. The apparatus includes a first layer that provides a gasket which abuts the battery box, the gasket having a central opening which aligns with the battery box opening. A second layer is in the form of a reverse buckling disk having a disk flange, a domed portion and a weakened portion on the dome that defines a disk burst pressure, the second layer having concave and convex sides. A third layer that is an outlet ring that sandwiches the second layer in between the first and the third layer layers, the outlet ring having a central opening surrounded by an edge. A plurality of teeth on the third layer extend from said edge inwardly a distance. A plurality of tabs are provided on the first and third layers, said tabs including circumferentially spaced apart tabs on each of said first and third layers, each tab having a tab opening, said tabs generally aligning so that a fastener can be passed through the tab openings of the first layer and the third layer. The third layer is attached to the second layer which is a metal disk by means of spot weld around the disk flange and the first layer attached to the metal disk by means of an adhesive thus forming a rupture disk assembly. The fasteners affix this rupture disk assembly to the box. The second layer is generally circular and surrounded by the fasteners. The teeth are positioned on the concave side of the second layer. In a preferred embodiment, the teeth do not extend so far inwardly that they extend inwardly beyond the weakened portion or score. From any radial line extending from the center of the layers, the weakened portion is reached before any tooth, the teeth thus being spaced radially a distance equal to or greater than the weakened portion or score.

    • In an improved support ring (100) adapted to support a rupturable rupture disc member (50) in arupture disc assembly (10), the support ring includes an upper surface (111), a lower surface (112), a central aperture (115) defined by an inner peripheral edge (116) and at least one tear-initiating projection (110), and having a cutting means (130) extending inwardly from the inner peripheral edge and below the upper surface and adapted to cut the rupture disc member. The cutting means includes a plurality of curved cutting portions (134), each of the plurality of curved cutting portions including an inner arc section (134a) extending closer to the inner peripheral edge than other portions of the curved cutting portion. There is also provided an improved support holder (60) adapted for use with a rupture disc assembly including a support ring having an angled cutting portion wherein the support ring is seated on the support holder. The improved holder (60) and support ring (100) provide improved tear initiation for a rupture disc (50).

    • An improved reverse rupture disc (10) for use as a safety pressure relief device is provided. The disc is defined by an annular flat flange region (12), a concave-convex disc dome region and a transition region (14) that joins the disc-shaped flat flange region to the concave-convex disc dome region (16). One or more deformations (18) are formed at or near the apex of the disc dome region for weakening the disc to the point that incidental damage to the disc will not weaken the disc any further, thereby ensuring that the disc will reverse at a cerain pressure, and no lower. The disc is also formed with an irregular transition region (20) at the base of the disc and a partial circular groove (30) in the transition region. The irregular transition region of the disc cooperates with a protrusion formed in a support ring disposed downstream of the disc to sever the disc dome from the annular flat flange region along the groove in the transition region. An ungrooved region of the transition region acts as a hinge holding the ruptured disc dome to the flat flange region after the disc has ruptured. The ruptured disc dome hangs over an arcuate projection formed in the support ring, which helps to prevent the disc from fragmenting.
