    • A pump or rotary equipment features a casing assembly having a region through which high velocity fluid and solids circulate, a chamber that does not have circulating therein the high velocity fluid and solids, an aperture that allows a related-chamber to be in fluidic communication with the region, but also does not have circulating therein the high velocity fluid and solids, and a corresponding aperture to allow the related-chamber to be in fluidic communication with an external region or location outside the casing assembly; and a pressure relief system having a rupture disc assembly with a rupture disc to be received in the corresponding aperture and to close the related-chamber so communication of the related-chamber with the region through which high velocity fluid and solids circulate subjects the related-chamber and the rupture disc to at least a portion of pressure contained within that region and also to release pressure exceeding a predetermined relief pressure of the rupture disc from the related-chamber to the external region or location, and has exhaust piping to attach to the casing assembly, couple the rupture disc assembly in the corresponding aperture, and provide from the related-chamber a path for escaping vapor and solids to be directed to the external region or location where the energy can be dissipated.

    • Rectangular or circular vent apparatus for protecting a confined space having a vent aperture for relief of an overpressure condition is provided with each including vent structure having a vent unit adapted to be positioned over the vent aperture in normal closing relationship thereto. Each vent unit preferably includes at least one spring steel panel provided with a movable pressure relief portion having an initial position extending across the vent aperture. A backstop is provided for arresting the degree of movement of the spring steel panel, that absorbs kinetic energy of opening of the spring steel panel, and that assures return of the relief portion of the spring steel panel in substantially its original shape to a selected opening position when a predetermined overpressure is applied against the relief portion of the vent unit. A line of weakness comprising a series of end-to-end slits defines the movable pressure relief portion of each spring steel panel. A synthetic resin sheet covers the slits of each line of weakness. Alternatively, the vent unit may have spring steel leaves positioned against a metal sheet provided with a relief portion and normally positioned in closing relationship to the vent aperture. The spring steel panel and the spring steel leaves have a sufficient modulus of resilience and elasticity to cause the relief portion of the spring steel panel or the metal sheet to return to their respective initial positions from the open positions thereof upon relief of the overpressure condition in the confined space.

    • A one-time-use pressure-actuated conduit closure is provided, to selectively withstand fluid pressure from one side of the device until the closure is removed remotely, the closure device being a frangible dome designed to withstand fluid pressures from one side but to rupture upon application of higher pressure on its other side, which provides a mechanism to isolate downhole fluid under (high) pressures in part of a well during operations for a period of time selected by an operator, and then to remove the isolation by breaking the rupture dome remotely by application of extra fluid pressure or other forces from surface. The frangible dome has features in at least one surface to guide and control its breakage to provide controlled shard sizes and shapes and a predictable opening for minimal obstruction of the conduit when broken away.
