摘要： A method of making a microarray by coating a flat substrate with a polymerizable hydrogel layer which contains anchoring moieties dispersed uniformly therethroughout. Following curing, a continuous layer of uniform thickness is securely attached to the upper surface of the substrate through an array region thereof. A plurality of different probes are then attached to create microspots at distinct spatial locations on the surface of this slab layer by linking the probes to the anchoring moieties in the cured hydrogel. Such anchoring moieties may employ linking systems such as organic chelators, that are activated by copper or some other metal, and complementary pairs such as avidin-biotin.

摘要： A storage-stable aerated gel composition comprises 30 to 97 % by weight of water, 0.2 to 5 % by weight of a gelling agent selected from xanthan gum, sodium alginate and neutralised carboxyvinyl polymer and 2 to 5 % by weight of a fine particulate, hydrophobic silicone-treated silica having a surface area of from 80 to 300 m /g. The composition is in the form of fine particles of an aqueous gel containing the water and gelling agent, the surfaces of which fine particles are coated with a coating of the finely particulate hydrophobic silica. The gel composition is prepared by mixing, under high shear conditions, the water and the fine particulate silica and then adding, to the resulting mixture, the gelling agent and mixing under high shear conditions.

摘要： Hydrophilic UV light absorbing polymerizing monomers are provided. These monomers are copolymerizable for providing biocompatible hydrogels capable of absorbing at least 90 % of the UV light incident to the hydrogels. Such hydrogels are optically transparent, have high refractive indices, and possess long term stability. The hydrogels provided are useful in all applications where hydrogels may be used including intraocular lenses, corneal inlays, corneal onlays, contact lenses and similar applications.

摘要： The biocompatibility of various polymers are improved by blending with them a polymer including a zwitterionic groups. The zwitterionic group is usually an ammonium phosphate ester zwitterionic group and the polymer containing it may be produced by the free radical polymerisation of ethylenically unsaturated monomers including a monomer bearing the zwitterionic group. Blending of the two polymers may be achieved by dry blending particulate polymers or by mixing the polymers in liquid dispersion or solution followed by removal of the liquid medium. The fibrinogen absorption and/or platelet activation of polymers may be reduced to a value of less than 80 % or even less than 60 % of the base polymer by introducing amounts of more than 10 % or more than 30 % of the zwitterionic group containing polymer. Preferred blends are of copolymers of 2-(methacryloyloxyethyl)-2'-(trimethylammonium)ethyl phosphate inner salt with higher alkyl (meth) acrylate, blended with olefin polymers and/or with rubber latices. The products may be used in medical devices in which they come into contact with bodily fluids, especially blood, plasma, serum and/or tear film.
