    • A mail case system (41, 70, 82, 350) includes facilitates sequence-sorting various types of mail (22) together into individual bags (30, 60, 100, 300) that each represent unique delivery points. The mail case (41, 70, 82, 350) uses multi-bag inserts so that the bags (30, 60, 100, 300) for several stops can be set up quickly for sorting. At the end of the sorting operation, the entire insert may be pulled down from the case (41, 70, 82, 350) as a single unit to maintain the established delivery point sequence. This eliminates the carrier's need to find separation points or to combine selections from multiple sequenced stacks of mail during the delivery operation. This results in a dramatic improvement in delivery efficiency.

    • A system (10) to separate and store trash which has been segregated into various categories for use in a multi-floor building. The system (10) comprises a vertical chute (14) with one access door (16) to the chute (14) located at each floor (12). The chute (14) has a vertical first path (40) and a second path (42) angled from the first path to permit trash to a different path by using a diverter (20). A receptacle mover (30) has a plurality of trash receptacles (22) lying on a platform (24) for selectively receiving a particular category of trash. A selector (32) selects the particular category of trash to be deposited into the access door (16). A dispenser (36) places an empty receptacle (22) onto the platform (24). A replacing mechanism (38) removes a receptacle (22A) filled with trash from the platform (24) to allow the dispenser (36) to place an empty receptacle (22) onto the platform (24). Each door (16) includes a locking mechanism to lock it while the receptacle mover (30) is in motion and to prevent another person from depositing trash into another access door (16).

    • A method and apparatus are disclosed for classifying materials (16) utilizing a computerized touch sensitive screen (9) or other computerized pointing device for operator identification and electronic marking of spatial coordinates of materials (16) to be extracted. An operator positioned at a computerized touch sensitive screen (9) views electronic images of the mixture of materials (16) to be sorted as they are conveyed past a sensor array (4) which transmits sequences of images of the mixture, either directly or through a computer to the touch sensitive display screen (9). The operator manually "touches" objects displayed on the screen (9) to be extracted from the mixture thereby registering the spatial coordinates of the objects within the computer. The computer then tracks the registered objects as they are conveyed and directs automated devices including mechanical means such as air jets (15), robotic arms (18), or other mechanical diverters to extract the registered objects.

    • A modular chute assembly section has a tubular shape with an axial bore (31). When joined together, one atop the other, a multistory gravity conveyor chute is formed for deposit of waste through an access door (2) at any floor that will fall to a basement receiver (7). In the basement, a receptacle mover (4) has a number of different receptacles (7) thereon, one for each type of separated waste. Controls (14) at each access door enable the waste depositor to selectively move a waste receptacle beneath the chute to correspond to the type of waste being deposited. Controls for locking the access door (13), selecting a particular waste receptacle (15), sensing when the door is closed (43), and signalling apparatus for informing a depositor of system operating conditions (6) are enclosed in a housing (41) attached to the section adjacent the access door (2). Conduits (26, 27) and wiring (28) for interconnecting the housings are attached to the section so that the sections may be stacked up and the wiring simply plugged together to form the complete chute and control system with minimal on site construction requirements. This ensures safe and correct installation in regions with variable available skills.
