    • A medical needle shield apparatus is provided that includes a shield that is extensible from a retracted position to an extended position to enclose a distal end of a needle. A binding member is disposed within the shield and defines binding surfaces that form an aperture configured for slidable receipt of the needle between the retracted position and the extended position. The binding member includes at least one drag inducing member extending therefrom that is configured for slidable engagement with the needle between the retracted position and the extended position such that the at least one drag inducing member engages the needle to create a drag force with the needle. The drag force and shield cause rotation of the binding member such that the binding surfaces engage the needle to prevent slidable movement of the needle in the extended position of the shield.

    • A safety needle device (10) for protecting a user against inadvertent needle-stick injury. This needle device includes a needle housing (18) having a distal housing opening (78). An arcuate groove (34) extends within the needle housing terminating adjacent the distal housing opening. A needle (16) is disposed within the arcuate groove having a distal needle portion (14) extending away from the needle housing through the distal housing opening. An elongate sheath assembly (12) surrounds the needle within the groove. A biasing member (82) is disposed within the needle housing and is configured to move the sheath assembly throughout the length of the arcuate groove and through the distal housing opening. The sheath assembly then completely encloses the distal needle portion.

The plunger (224) retracts the needle (210) completely back inside the cartridge (202), again without the needle (210) contacting human hands and further releases the plunger (224) from the second compartment (260) to enable removal of the cartridge (202) from the barrel shaped portion (214) of the syringe.
