摘要： A neck brace (10) is provided, which has an impact surface (30) which that can limit movement of a helmet by contacting an underside of the helmet, bearing surfaces (44,72,88) configured for bearing on the body of a wearer, and a structure (24,66,94,100) between the impact surface (30) and the bearing surfaces (44,72,88), that can transfer impact loads of the helmet on the impact surface (30), to the wearer's body. Parts (92,98) of the neck brace (10) that defines part of the impact surface (30) are displaceable towards the wearer s body and the structure (94,100) is configured to permit the displacement at rates slower than a predetermined rate, but to resist displacement if the rate exceeds the predetermined rate. The displacement of the parts (92,98) allow the wearer to move the helmet to positions not otherwise permitted by the impact surface (30), but the resistance to displacement ensures that impact loads can still be transferred from the helmet to the body, during impacts.

摘要： An emergency extrication collar comprising a flexible band for encircling the wearer's neck, and a chin support member which may be readily adjusted in elevation with respect to the band so as to permit adjustment to fit patients having varying neck sizes. The chin support member is connected to the band by means of a post which is slidably connected to a vertical strap on the band, and such that the elevation of the chin support member above the post, and thus the neck size of the collar, may be adjusted by simply sliding the post and chin support upwardly to any selected size between the size extremes. A pawl and ratchet interconnection between the post and strap precludes movement in the opposite direction. The collar is secured in its adjusted size by means of a locking arm which is pivotally mounted on the post, and movement of the locking arm to its release position also releases the pawl and ratchet interconnection.

Independently, the present invention provides methods and mechanisms in which the chin support can angulate independently of the collar body. Such angulation is preferably accomplish by pivotally supporting the chin piece on the racks, or on the left and right chin support pieces. Thus, in a preferred class of embodiments, the collar has a pivot for the chin support pieces relative to the collar body, and an other pivot for the chin piece relative to the chin support pieces.
