    • A call screening method allows calls made to the subscriber to be screened while the subscriber uses another communications medium. An enhanced services platform (ESP) receives a call from a caller using a public telephone number for the subscriber (202). The ESP accesses a database storing a public telephone number and a private packet-based address for subscribers and retrieves a private packet-based address of the subscriber (206, 208). An introductory message prompts the caller to leave a message (210). The ESP uses the private packet-based address to establish an audio connection via the communication medium and notifies the subscriber o the call (212, 214). If the subscriber answers the call a communication path is provided between the caller and subscriber so the subscriber may hear the caller leave the message without the caller knowing the subscribe is listening (216). The ESP connects the caller and subscriber for two-way communication upon authorization of the subscriber (218).

    • System and method for putting control of incoming telephone calls in the hands of subscribers with the aid of computer software and the Internet. In effect, a very efficient multiplexer is provided that does not require a change in the behavior of the called party or the calling party. This system permits the called party to hear a spoken message by the calling party in real time, and the content of the spoken message permits the called party to decide how to handle the call. The system adaptively learns and captures the rules of the called party for handling calls, and learns which callers the called party always wishes to talk to. The system uses special control software on the called party's computer which is connected to the Internet. The system employs a central server in which all of the required intelligence is resident. Audio signals are exchanged via non-data channels provided by the telephone companies and by the Internet. Either a very simple Internet busy pick-up is provided, or a very complex messaging system is provided, as desired. A feature is the monitoring and screening of incoming calls before deciding how to handle them. Another feature is the capturing and storage of the decision making profile.

    • The present invention provides a selective automatic call forwarding method and system. In response to a request from a subscriber for the selective call forwarding service, a selective call forwarding service record is created for the subscriber which includes the subscriber's telephone number, a "trigger" telephone number, and a call forwarding number associated with the trigger number. An example of the trigger number might be the subscriber's Internet access telephone number. An example of the call forwarding number might be the subscriber's mobile telephone number. A determination is made, e.g. a flag is set in the subscriber record, whenever the subscriber is engaged in a communication initiated to the trigger number. Thereafter, incoming calls directed to the subscriber are automatically forwarded to the call forwarding number. However, if the subscriber is currently engaged in a communication with a telephone number other than the trigger number registered in the subscriber's call forwarding service record, incoming calls are handled in a manner other than forwarding the incoming call to the call forwarding number. Such other procedures might include, for example, generation of a busy signal, execution of a call waiting service, or execution of a call completion service.
