    • This invention relates to a method for controlling an amplification within a receiver. The gain of a variable gain amplifier which amplifies an input signal to obtain a gain-controlled signal is set. Said gain controlled signal is analog-to-digital converted. Thereby digital words are generated. Each digital word has a value out of a plurality of possible digital values. Digital words having a value within a first and a second subset of the possible digital values are counted in order to generate a first and a second counter value. The gain is set in accordance with the first and second counter values in a fashion that all counter values are as equal as possible. Furthermore, this invention is related to a circuit to be used within a receiver for adjusting the gain of a variable gain amplifier in order to ensure a proper analog-to-digital conversion.

    • A radio receiver (30) comprises an ADC (13) including a clip counter. The power of digitised signals provided by the ADC (13) is estimated by a power estimator (31), and an ideal gain value is computed from the power so estimated by a gain computation device (32). Gain computation signals are fed to a gain control input of an amplifier (11) via an LPF (33). A saturation detector (34) is connected to a clip counter output of the ADC (13), and to a control input of the LPF (33). The saturation detector (34) is arranged when saturation of the ADC is detected to reduce the gain setting value by at least two steps, by which the gain of the amplifier is immediately reduced. A detector detects the Doppler frequency of signals received and accordingly determines the size of the drop in amplification which is effected when saturation of the ADC (13) is detected. The gain reduction may be 3dB under very low Doppler shift conditions and 12dB under very high Doppler shift conditions.

    • A method of receiving radio signals in a receiver for a digital wireless com­munications system comprises the steps of level adjusting a received radio signal by an automatic gain control (12); and despreading the signal in a RAKE unit (14) having a number of fingers. The despread data symbols are truncated to symbols represented by a smaller number of bits than that of the despread data symbols by selecting the least significant bits of the despread data symbols. The truncated data symbols are saturated; and the despread data symbols are level adjusted in dependence of said despread data sym­bols, so that overflow for the truncated data symbols is prevented. In this way the number of bits used to represent the despread data symbols that are out­put from the fingers of the RAKE can be reduced in such a way that the loss of soft information is minimized.

    • In a radio including analog and digital portions, with at least one A/D converter between the analog and digital portions, and the selectivity of the radio at least partly implemented in the digital domain, an AGC controller sets a first variable gain amplifier (VGA) (302) to low gain upon a determination that a wide-band power estimation exceeds a wide-band threshold. The wide-band threshold is selected to reduce the occurrence of A/D converter saturation. If the wide-band power estimation is less than the wide-band threshold, then for each VGA (302) in the analog portion, a determination is made whether a narrow band power estimate exceeds a narrow-band threshold, corresponding to that VGA (302), plus a hysteresis value, in which case that VGA (302) is set to low gain; or whether the narrow-band energy estimate is less than the narrow-band threshold minus a hysteresis value, in which case that VGA (302) is set to high gain.
