摘要： A read head with two read sensors enables reading of a magnetically recorded medium of increased areal densities such as would be provided by two-dimensional magnetic recording. The two sensors, which may be formed in separate depositions, are arranged vertically relative to each other as top and bottom sensors, with a downtrack displacement between them that is less than 900 A and a crosstrack displacement that is less than 600 A. Their separate free layers are connected by four or three conducting leads and require no junctions for their connections. In one embodiment each sensor has separate top and bottom shields and leads. In another embodiment, there is a common shield and lead between the two sensors, but a separate top shield/lead for the top sensor and bottom shield/lead for the bottom sensor.

In order to write signals simultaneously in various tracks the write head is provided with a structure having integrated, juxtaposed write units (25a; 25b) extending substantially transversely to the longitudinal direction and the width direction and each being provided with at least one write gap (27a; 27b). One write gap of the one write unit and one write gap of the other write unit of every two adjacent write units are situated in mutually different planes (P1; P2) which are oriented substantially transversely to the longitudinal direction.

摘要： A thin film magnetic head includes an integrally formed preconditioning gap (110) having a width greater than the write gap width (116) to precondition a magnetic media for the more accurate placement of magnetic transitions on a magnetic medium. The thin film magnetic head is comprised of a first extended pole piece (100) underlying a thin pancake helically wound magnetic coil (102) with a second pole piece (104) aligned with the first pole piece (100) and attached to it through the center of the coil. A third pole piece (106), aligned with the first two pole pieces (100 and 104), overlies all of the foregoing and is attached to the first pole piece (100) at its rearward end (108) to thereby cover the other underlying layers of this thin film structure. The single magnetic coil (102) surrounds the second pole piece (104) and energizes both gaps (110 and 116).
