    • A tape media identification code for use with tape media enclosed in a tape cartridge having a form factor that is compatible with old generation tape drives. The present tape media identification code is recognized by new generation tape drives that take advantage of additional features of the enclosed tape media. Old generation tape drives are unable to recognize the present tape media identification code, thus treating the enclosed tape media as previous generation tape media. While old generation tape drives are unable to take advantage of the additional features of the enclosed tape media, the old generation tape drive is able to record and/or read data from the enclosed tape media. In an embodiment, the tape media identification code identifies a length of tape media having a length of cleaning media attached thereto.

    • An electrical connection of a transfer station (100) releasably, repeatably electrically couples with respect to a matching connection of a portable cartridge (40). Elongated electrical contacts are registered with two adjacent individual compression members. A loader engages the portable cartridge, registering the cartridge substrate contacts in face-to-face relation with the matching flexible substrate electrical contacts, and exerting a normal force to the cartridge to compress the compression element and create non-wiping contact between the facing electrical contacts.

    • A compressed digital audio player is constituted with a number of integrated circuit (IC) components and electronic elements to render compressed digital audio, outputting the decompressed digital audio audibly and/or magnetically. The components/elements include memory module(s), decompressor, I/O interfaces, micro-controller(s), transducer, and digital-to-analog converter. In various embodiments, the components/elements are distributively disposed in two housings, but operatively coupled together. Both housings are provided with I/O interfaces to operatively couple the components/elements distributively disposed in the two housings. Accordingly, the player is highly portable, but also has the ability to interface with other audio components, in particular, through a cassette tape player.

    • A radio receiver augmentation system (10) for insertion in a cassette player or compact disc player includes a receiver unit (10) and an antenna unit (40, 41). The receiver unit (10) includes an insertable element (11) having a size and shape suitable for insertion in a tape cassette receiving slot of a cassette player/radio combination or in a compact disc receiving slot of a compact disc player/radio combination and delivers audio program signals to the magnetic head (31) of the tape cassette player or the optical coupler (31) of the compact disc player. The audio program signals come by retransmission from an antenna unit (40, 41) that receives radio broadcast signals from satellites and their terrestrial repeaters having frequencies in the range of about 300 MHZ to about 4000 MHZ. The system's circuitry conditions the signal for aural presentation through the tape cassette player/radio combination or compact disc player/radio combination.
