    • Elliptical features are described in an image generator database in terms of an origin and major and minor axes defined by reference to a world or model space coordinate system. Image data is assembled for display by transforming the database contents into screen space and assessing for each of an array of sampling points distributed across screen space which features are to contribute to the portion of a final image in which the sampling point is located. In the case of elliptical features, data is transformed into eyepoint space and each sampling point is projected into eyepoint space to determine the point of intersection between a line drawn through the sampling point from the eyepoint and a plane defined by the axes. The coordinates of the intersection point in a coordinate system defined by the origin and axes, are used to determine whether or not the feature contributes to the sampling point.

    • A weather effects generator (10) that generates weather data based on real-world weather data, and provides this data to a host simulator (16). The type of data provided and the spatial distribution of the data depend on the type of simulation. A real world database (11) is accessed to obtain a dataspace of weather data elements, each having a location parameter and various weather-related parameters. For visual display simulators, the data elements are preprocessed to obtain color, transparency, and texture values for each data element. The preprocessed data elements are further processed to obtain a prioritized display list of those data elements that correspond to field-of-view data provided by the simulator. Each data element in this list is assigned a graphics primitive that can be rasterized in accordance with the color and transparency values.

    • An image texturing system utilizes theme cells to facilitate generation of terrain image data area-by-area for a display. The system is effective in flight simulation apparatus, as for training pilots. A memory stores theme maps representing areas of specific terrains, e.g. terrains lying below a specific flight path. The theme maps are indexed on a square grid pattern and have feature identification codes located at each grid corner, e.g. forest, water, etc. A selection device controlled by an image generator selects a current theme map and dissects it cell-by-cell to provide corner-referenced representations of a current theme cell, i.e. the feature identification codes identifying the four corners of the current theme cell and its quartered terrain treatments, i.e. forest, ocean, or the like. A terrain storage device stores a library of terrain treatment pattern arrays that are derived, for example, from photo data of forest, ocean, or the like. A terrain treatment pager controlled by the image generator provides representations of select terrain treatments indicated for the current theme cell and selects the type and sequence of the terrain treatment required for generating the current theme cell. A theme element assembler receives the representations of the current theme cell and the select terrain treatments. Using the data, the cell is specified according to rules to provide picture data representing a plurality of terrain treatments with varying patterns.

    • A simulated view on a viewing surface of a raster scan television display of a changeable illuminated area located on a plane surface is provided. The source of illumination is a cone of light whose apex can be located at any distance from an eyepoint and the plane surface and whose conical surface intersects the plane surface creating the illuminated area. The line of sight signals and orientation signals are combined in a signal processor (82) to generate a signal representative of the location of the intersection point relative to the conic section which results from the intersection of the cone of light with the plane surface. A signal comparator (84) determines whether the intersection point is within or without the conic section, and controls a video processor (86) to create an illumination area on the viewing surface corresponding to the plane surface intersection point when the point lies within or on the conic section.

    • Use of scientific models to generate graphical virtual environments is described. In an embodiment at least two different scientific models are used. Input data which is representative of a real world environment is used by a first scientific model, such as a climate model, and data output by the first scientific model is then fed into a second, different, scientific model, such as an ecological model, in order to generate simulation data.
