Raised surfaces (80) may be provided on the plate beneath the ischial tuberosity region of the operator to increase the dynamic range of perceived g-loading effects. A backrest plate (92) may be provided for motion in conjunction with the seat plate and a thin bladder (128) may likewise be provided thereon. Driven radial elements (108, 110) may then be positioned on the lower part of the backrest plate to augment pressure cues at selected areas of the operator's back.

    • Method and apparatus for a visual display system in a vehicle simulator to compensate for distortion and to maximize illumination in a projected image substantially at the same time. When a spherical mirror (11) is interposed between a curved rear-projection screen (12) and a viewing position (10), certain distortions are developed which detract from realism. Such distortions are compensated for by reflecting the image off a curved folding mirror (13) positioned so that its major axis (CL-2) is substantially perpendicular to the major axis (CL-1) of the curved rear-projection screen (12). In accordance with the invention, when such compensation is achieved, the illumination of the projected image will be to substantially its brightest.

    • Digitally coded time signals are employed to control the generation of cyclic system output signals. Time signals are fed to the inputs of first and second output signal generators (14) and (15) respectively. A setting device (17), adjustable by the user, conditions the second output signal generator to shift the phase of a group of second generator output signals relative to the first output generator signals. Alternate constructions (15) and (16) of the second output signal generator provide capabilities of phase shifting either groups of pulses or a single pulse.

    • New structure for making a large screen or minor, such as used in a vehicle simulator, whereby such large structure is divided into a plurality of, preferably, identical segments (10, 11). Each segment, then, is made on the same mold or pattern which ensures an accurate radius of curvature and that the edges of each segment will co-act with the adjacent segment in a laterally non-slipping relationship. By this structure, the curved surfaces co-act together to define a smooth larger surface. Each segment is formed of expanded polyurethane foam (17) with the two surfaces (12, 13 and 15, 16) treated in different ways, depending on the use to which the structure is to be put.
