    • A computer system having a visual display indicating the status of an attached printer is disclosed. The visual display allows the user to determine various status states of the attached printer without physical examination of the printer itself. Printer states requiring user intervention, and printer states not requiring user intervention, are disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the computer system displays a Printer Status window which both graphically and textually indicates the printer state. When printing, a graphical representation of the attached printer is displayed within a portion of the Printer Status window, and is animated to represent the actual printing of a page. If an error occurs while printing, the Printer Status window preferably indicates the nature of the error, and the steps which must be performed (if any) to continue printing. When not printing, the user may determine the present status of the attached printer, and such information is preferably presented to the user in graphical form. The Printer Status window may be iconized by the user, and the corresponding icon also displays to the user the state of the attached printer.

    • In the production of variable documents, front end software is utilized in a method and apparatus that have a number of advantages in viewing and aiding in the configuration of a variable print job. Variable data is defined in the PDF format which enables variable content to be created and stored above static content. The user can model data bases, position frames, set properties, store states, combine states with logic, and preview merge content. Pages may be repositioned on press sheets specific to supported plant devices, including particular imaging devices. A document may be saved as a .ps file and converted to a .pdf layout. The .pdf layout may then be opened to add at least one of variable paragraphs, variable tags, and variable resources (such as TIFF images, PDF images, and entire PDF pages), and also opened to create an imposition file. A different imposition file can be created from the same .pdf layout so as to image the variable document with different imaging devices.

    • Character strings inter alia are inputted into a data processing unit (1) during the normal course of operation. Said strings are outputted in a sequential character sequence via an output interface (4). The primary output signal flow thus produced is formatted in such a way that it can control an available printer (5). Position control signals added to the output signal flow cause the printer (5) to output a respectively allocated character string in a given output position. According to the invention, a converter (6) is coupled to the output interface (4) and placed in a configuration mode. The data processing device (1) is allocated a marking character string ("A06AAA") instead of each character string which is to be detected selectively. The output signal flow is received by the converter (6) and searched for marking character strings. When a marking character string is detected, identifying position information relating to the point of origin in the output signal flow is obtained from the position information signals which are also transmitted and stored along with the number of characters in the converter(6). In the subsequent operating mode, any number of character strings are detected in the marked positions of the output signal flow using stored position information, they are read and can be subsequently integrated with a secondary output signal flow in an appropriate manner. The format of the secondary output signal flow is modified according to an alternative output device (14). The signals constituting the secondary output signal flow are formed by data from an output memory (B) and by the character strings of the first output signal flow which are read from a memory (A) using a control device (8).

    • The invention is a method for banding and rastering a datastream for a page image in which the main processing unit (MPU 16) performs the steps of interpreting a datastream (14) containing a specification of the page image, generating a plurality of rendering commands from the datastream, dividing the page into a plurality of bands, ordering the commands into the bands, accessing the commands from the bands, allocating memory to a band for storing a bitmap of that band; and the graphics processing unit (GPU 18) performs the steps of processing one or more rendering commands to generate a bitmap of the band, monitoring access to the memory to limit processing of the command or commands to the band, and dispatching the band to a print engine (20).
