    • The present invention provides a method for operating a device (2) having an analogue current output (8) for outputting a current value corresponding to a measured value or a manipulated variable of the device (2) and a current final controlling element (16) which is associated with the current output (8) and sets the current value at the current output (8) on the basis of a current desired value provided in the device (2). During normal operation of the device (2), the current desired value is provided according to a measured value or manipulated variable to be output. In this case, the method has the following steps: monitoring, in the device (2) during normal operation, whether the current final controlling element (16) sets a high current value corresponding to the current desired value at the current output (8); providing a low current desired value below the lower current limit value if no correspondingly high current value can be set; and subsequently checking the current setting functionality by providing a high current desired value above the upper current limit value and by monitoring, in the device (2), whether the current final controlling element (16) can set a high current value corresponding to the high current desired value at the current output (8).
