    • A reloadable film canister (11) includes a light-tight enclosure (18) with an aperture for dispensing film therethrough. A spool (23) of film may be loaded into the enclosure, and may be removed when the film is dispensed. In one embodiment of the invention, an encoder (28) (field modulating) disk is included as part of the canister. In another embodiment the encoder disk (24) is affixable to the film spool and loadable with the film spool into the canister. The spool is mountable in the enclosure for rotation therein and for dispensing, at each step of a stepper motor (43), a predetermined length of film corresponding to the motor's step size. The encoder disk has a plurality of uniformly-spaced, peripherally-arranged segments (25) (elements) detectable by an external detector (36) (sensor), the detector and the stepper motor operating under control of a microprocessor (41). Upon rotation of the spool and dispensation of film, the disk provides information, via the detector, to the microprocessor enabling the microprocessor to determine, from the number of motor steps and number of segments detected during rotation, the diameter of the film roll and the length of undispensed film remaining in the canister.

    • A web-spool (40) for a cartridge (10) comprises a cylindrical core (44) having an outer periphery at each end thereof with at least one core lug (48) and an annular ring (52) extending radially outward from each periphery in axially spaced relation to form a core peripheral groove (54) therebetween at each core end. Complementary ratchet teeth (55 and 78) are provided on opposed mating surfaces (76 and 80) of the core (44) and flange (46), to permit relative rotation therebetween in one direction for securing the two (44 and 46) together, and to prevent relative rotation in the opposite direction and consequent unintended disassembly of those members (44 and 46).

    • A printing machine includes a movable lens, which may be placed in position at the time of printing and held at a stand-by position spaced apart from a film during other operations. In this way, maintenance and adjustment of the lens become easy. A sample print monitor comprising a CCD camera, a line sensor, etc., is provided for measuring deviation of the center of exposure to automatically register correction values. A desired exposure angle is obtained by rotating a negative mask portion, a lens portion, an exposure table, etc., at the same angle. In addition to a rotary mechanism, the lens portion is slid finely so as to constitute a printing machine of a three-dimensional photograph having higher accuracy. Moving means are provided to an enlarging lens and to the exposure table so as to effect printing by trimming. An edge shaver is caused to act in a rectangular direction to the travelling direction of printing paper so as to cut off dust within the range of the end surface of the tip of printing paper cut by a cutter, and the dust is sucked by a dust suction mechanism and is sent to a dust box.
