摘要： A system and method for registering the frames of film with respect to an aperture (32) in a motion picture projector. A registration reference mark is applied to each frame corresponding to the location of the frame on the film. When the film is intermittently stopped in the projector's film gate (22), the registration reference mark is read to determine the location of that frame relative to the immediately preceding frame. If the frame in the gate (22) is misregistered, the gate is moved to correctly register the frame prior to projection. By properly registering the frames, the "jitter" and "weave" associated with conventional projectors is eliminated and resolution of the projected film image is enhanced.

摘要： An "immersive experience" motion picture theatre is provided either as a purpose-built structure or as a "retro-fit" of an existing domed theatre. The theatre of the invention has an audience seating deck (20) which slopes downwardly towards a screen (22) of part-cylindrical shape. The screen slopes upwardly and extends above the seating deck as well as wrapping around the sides of the seating deck. A projector (26) located within the seating deck (20) projects images onto the screen (22) about an upwardly oriented projection axis, through an orthographic fisheye lens which minimizes distortion of centre regions of the images. In this way, motion pictures that have been shot for showing on domed screens can be successfully projected onto the curved screen (22) of the invention.

摘要： Subtitles or other supplemental visual displays (8) are added to a motion picture by separately projecting (2, 6) the supplemental display onto the motion picture display. The projections of the motion picture and supplemental display are synchronized with each other, such as by the use of a film (88) time code (98), so that the correct supplemental display is projected at the right time. The supplemental display is preferably stored in a digital format, and can be integrated with an audio store (12) used to play back the film's sound track. Storage formats that can be used include a variable size data frame (114, 116, 118) in which the length of each particular frame matches the number of character spaces required by the display, and a constant data frame size (146, 148, 150) large enough to accommodate the largest display. With variable data frame sizes the storage medium is preferably prescanned (128) to establish a file (130) that correlates the locations of the individual data frames with the corresponding film time code units or other synchronizing data. The film itself remains unaltered, and many different sets of subtitles or other supplemental visual displays can be used with the same film print.
