    • A system (10) and method for weighing of items such as mailpieces (MP) in the presence of external vibration such as ground noise. The system (10) includes a scale system (12) having a platform (22) connected to a load cell (20), which provides an output signal to an analog-to-digital converter (24). The resulting digital output signal is processed by a low pass filter (28) and analyzed by a microprocessor (30) to determine weights of items (MP) on the platform (22). The microprocessor (30) also determines postage amounts as functions of the weights and outputs these postage amounts to a postage meter (16). The system also includes an accelerometer (32) and a limit detector (34) for generating a no go signal if external vibrations exceed a predetermined limit. The microprocessor (30) accepts a weight as valid if the external vibrations do not exceed the limit at any time while the weight is being determined and otherwise initiates an alternative weight determining method.

    • A method of processing a plurality of mail items in an automated system without isolating each mail item on a scale. The method includes creation of a mail item record that identifies the item and includes the weight. Mail items may be weighed by determining a first scale weight reading, introducing a mail item onto the scale, determining the mail item weight at one or more times within a time window, and finding the difference between each consecutive scale weight. Differences between scale weight readings not equal to zero are outputted. All outputted scale weight readings are totaled to obtain the mail item weight. Further disclosed are a mail processing system and a method of ceasing mail processing when invalid weights are detected.

    • A system and method for weighing of items such as mailpieces in the presence of external vibration such as ground noise. The system includes a scale system having a platform connected to a load cell, which provides an output signal to an analog-to-digital converter. The resulting digital output signal is processed by a low pass filter and analyzed by a microprocessor to determine weights of items on the platform. The microprocessor also determines postage amounts as functions of the weights and outputs these postage amounts to a postage meter. The microprocessor determines the weights as the median of the peak to valley difference of the digital output signal when the digital output signal peak to valley difference is less than a predetermined value. The microprocessor identifies peaks and valleys of the digital output signal by determining when the derivative of the signal changes sign. The microprocessor estimates the weight as an average of a sum of medians for N preceding cycles if the digital output signal does not converge.
